High School Boy’s Cross Country Poll: Week 6

Every Thursday, El Paso Running will utilize a point system to highlight El Paso’s top boy’s cross country runners.

The system is as follows: In a race of less than 150 runners, first place gets 10 points, second gets 9 points all the way down to 10th place which gets 1 point. For meets with between 150 to 300 runners, double points will be rewarded meaning 20 points for first, 19 for second all the way down to 1 point for 20th. For every additional 150 runners, another 10 runners will be included in the points.

For those who like raw times, we also list the Top 25 boys race times and the meets and dates that they occurred.

Coronado Invitational: 8 a.m. Friday at Don Haskins Recreation Center. Coronado, Bowie, Irvin, Del Valle, Canutillo, Mt View, Cathedral, Eastlake, El Dorado, Socorro, Radford.

Clint/Riverside Invitational:  8 a.m. Saturday at Clint High School. Andress, Austin, Jefferson, Chapin, Clint, Riverside, Harmony, Bel Air, Hanks, Horizon, Parkland, Montwood, San Elizario, Anthony, Ft. Hancock, Gadsden, LPI, Chaparral, Santa Teresa, Eastwood.

McNeil Invitational:  8 a.m. Saturday at Old Settlers Park, Round Rock. Franklin, El Paso, Burges.

The Austin Panthers have been in the top 10 all season. They working toward defending the District 1-4A Championship next month.

Top 10

1. Eastwood: Trooper runners took six of the top eight spots to easily win the Loretto/Cathedral Open at Veterans Park, scoring 20 points. Junior Job DeSantos was second in 16:13.14 followed by senior Luke Cruz (third, 16:16.57), senior Marcos Madrid (fourth, 16:17.52), sophomore Noah Loweree (fifth, 16:19.89), junior Jonah Herd Jr. (sixth, 17:05.19), and sophomore Elias Alcocer (eighth, 17:12.67). The team is scheduled to race at the Clint/Riverside Invitational Saturday at Clint High School.  

2. Franklin: The Cougars did not race last week. They are scheduled to race the state course (Old Settlers Park) at the McNeil Invitational in Round Rock.

3. Burges: The Mustangs dominated the El Paso High Invitational Saturday at Mary Frances Keisling Park placing five runners in the top nine for 26 points. Senior Jesus Gastelum-Bustamante won his first invitational of the season, racing to a 16:11.51. Senior Malin Arnoldussen was fourth in 16:34.65, senior Jacob Yeager was fifth in 16:37.98, senior Carlos Chavez was seventh in 17:02.48 and senior Iskander Vargas was ninth in 17:07.38. The team is scheduled to race at the McNeil Invitational in Round Rock on Saturday.

4. Pebble Hills: The Spartans did not run their top runners at the Loretto/Cathedral Open at Veterans Park. Sophomore Nathan Martinez turned in a top 10 performance, finishing 10th in 17:22.31.

5. Coronado: The T-Birds did not run its full varsity team at the El Paso High Invitational Saturday at Mary Frances Keisling Park. Senior Max Sandhu was second in 16:15.65 and junior Rodrigo Pinales was third in 16:19.29. Coronado will race at its own invitational: Friday at Don Haskins Recreation Center.

6. San Elizario: The Eagles finished second at the Loretto/Cathedral Open with 104 points. Junior Antonio Arreola was ninth in 17:13.31. The team will race the Clint/Riverside Invitational Saturday at Clint High School.  

7. El Paso High: The Tigers were without Miles Westbrook but still managed to finish in third at their own invitational at Mary Frances Keisling Park. Senior Ulysses O’Rourke ran a 16:47.76, good for sixth place. They are scheduled to race at the McNeil Invitational Saturday at Old Settlers Park.

8. Austin: The Panthers did not run its full varsity squad at the Loretto/Cathedral Open at Veterans Park. Senior Pedro Jimenez managed a seventh-place finish, completing the course in 17:09.85. Expect them to be at full strength at the Clint/Riverside Invitational Saturday at Clint High School.  

9. Socorro: The Bulldogs move up a spot after its 99-point, fourth-place finish at the El Paso High Invitational. It’s top two runners were sophomore Jorge Mendez (12th, 17:24.99) and freshman Jose Chavez (14th, 18:04.77). The team will race at the Coronado Invitational at the Don Haskins Recreation Center.

10. Hanks: The Knights return to the top 10 on the strength of its fourth-place finish at the Loretto/Cathedral Open. It’s top two runners were junior Zerach Hernandez (12th, 17:23.63) and freshman Mateo Diaz (18th, 17:32.10). Hanks will race the Clint/Riverside Invitational Saturday at Clint High School.  

Dropped out: Eastlake.

On the brink: Americas, Chapin.
