High School Girls XC Preseason Poll 2023

Every Wednesday, El Paso Running will utilize a point system to highlight El Paso’s top girls cross country runners.

The system is as follows: In a race of less than 150 runners, first place gets 10 points, second gets 9 points all the way down to 10th place which gets 1 point. For meets with between 150 to 300 runners, double points will be rewarded meaning 20 points for first, 19 for second all the way down to 1 point for 20th. For every additional 150 runners, another 10 runners will be included in the points.

For those who like raw times, we also list the Top 25 girls race times and the meets and dates that they occurred.

Top 10

1. Franklin: The Cougars are primed and ready to contend for a spot on the podium at the UIL State Championship in November. Franklin is coming off its fifth straight District 1-6A title, finishing third in the  Region 1-6A championship and seventh at state. The girls are looking for its fourth trip to state in five years. Sophomores Emily Orr and Abigail Pinon will be the top runners along with junior Sophia Keiser and seniors Victoria Hoyt and Brooke McCune.

2. Eastwood: The Troopers finished second in District 1-6A and ninth at the Region 1-6A Championship. Eastwood will be led by junior Adelynn Rodriguez who won the district title, was 12th at regionals and 43rd at state. Juniors Paulina Estrada and Karraisa Duarte along with sophomore Maddie Estrada will also be heavily counted on.

3. Pebble Hills: The Spartans placed third at the District 1-6A Championship and for the first time in school history, advanced to regionals where the team finished 18th.  Seniors Carolina Zarrabal and Natalie Franco and sophomore Aubrey Arsenault will lead the team this year. Look for big things from this group with a return to regionals firmly in its grasp.

4. El Paso High: The Tigers won the District 1-5A Championship and were the top El Paso team at regionals, placing ninth. El Paso High will be led by seniors Andrea Castillo and Sofia Ramirez and sophomore Clarissa Castillo.

5. Hanks: The Knights won the District 2-5A Championship, placing five runners in the top 10, and finished 17th at regionals. The Knights are led by senior Destinee Loeza, junior Elizabeth Aguirre and sophomores Lily Arias, Alina Levario and Jessica Fino. Watch for newcomer Ashlynn McMilan, a sophomore who was a 365 last year. This could be a special year for the Knights.

6. Montwood: The Rams placed fourth at the District 1-6A Championship. Sophomore Mia Hairston, who advanced to regionals last year, is the top runner. Seniors Layla Aguilar and Paula Galaz Carreon will also contribute.

7. Eastlake: The Falcons finished sixth at the District 1-6A Championship. Its top runner is sophomore Chloe Del Real. Senior Natalie Martinez and junior Olivia Belmonte are two other returning runners. Sophomore Marielle Rubio will also be a valuable contributor.

8. Americas: Senior Cleo Naranjo, a newcomer to the team, will be the top runner with juniors Lexee Salas, Giselle Abascal and Laila Morales providing support. Watch for the Trailblazers to challenge for a spot to regionals.

9. Chapin: The Huskies finished third at the District 1-5A Championship, earning them a berth to the Region 1-5A Championship. Junior Rebecca Duran will lead the team this year along with seniors Ava Maldonado and Biviana Garcia.

10. Canutillo: The Eagles finished second at the District 1-5A Championship and 16th at regionals. The Eagles top runner is sophomore Nevaeh Escobedo.

UIL State meet delegation includes 4 relay teams and 8 individuals; championship starts Thursday

El Paso will send four relay teams and eight individual athletes to the UIL state track and field meet Thursday-Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.

Here is a look at who qualified, where they rank in the state’s final nine and what time they race.

Franklin’s 400-meter relay team – Beau Sparks, Julian Mars, Gerald Williams and Jordan Morales – will race at the State Championship on Saturday.

Class 6A

Luis Pastor, Coronado. Pastor will race in 1,600 and 3,200 meters. He won the Region 1-6A Championship in the 1,600 meters with a time of 4:13.65 and the 3,200 meters with a time of 9:05.01. He is seeded No. 3 in the 1,600 and No. 2 in the 3,200.

The Franklin boys 400-meter relay team – Beau Sparks, Julian Mars, Gerald Williams and Jordan Morales – earned the wild card for the state after finishing third at the Region 1-6A Championship in 41.60 seconds.  The team is seed No. 8.

Chapin’s Seth Truax finished second at Region 1-5A Championship in the 800 meters with a time of 1:57.04. He is ranked No. 5 in the city heading into the state finals.

Class 5A

Parkland’s 800 relay team of Joseph Gomez, Kaleb Martinez, Lincoln Jurado III and DJ Crest earned a wild card spot after finishing third at the Region 1-5A Championship in 1:27.06. The team is seeded 6th.

Seth Truax, Chapin. Truax finished second at Region 1-5A Championship in the 800 meters with a time of 1:57.04. He is ranked No. 7 heading into the state finals.

Morgan Little, Chapin. Little will compete for an individual state medal in the long jump and 100 meters and is part of the 400-meter relay team. She was second at Regionals in the long jump with a mark of 19 feet, 8 inches and won the 100 meters with a time of 11.59 seconds. She is seeded No. 3 in the long jump and No. 2 in the 100 meters.

Chapin’s 400-meter and 800-meter relay of Samahdi Foster, Caidence Johnson, Maliyah Pride and Morgan Little will compete for state medals on Friday.

Chapin girls 400-meter relay and 800-meter relay of Samahdi Foster, Caidence Johnson, Maliyah Pride and Morgan Little. Chapin was second in the 800 relay at the Region 1-5A Championship with a time of 1:39.12 and earned a wild card the 400 relay with a time of 47.13 seconds. The 800-relay team is seeded No. 3 and the 400-relay team is No. 5.

Horizon’s Ricardo won the Region 1-5A high jump championship with a leap of 6 feet, 11 inches. He is the top seed headed into Friday’s state meet.

Ricardo Leyva, Horizon. Leyva won the Region 1-5A high jump championship with a leap of 6 feet, 11 inches. He is headed to state as the top seed.

Riverside’s Jose Guardado and Angel Munoz will compete for state medals on Thursday – Guardado in the long jump and Munoz also in the long jump and the 300-meter hurdles.

Class 4A

Chris Moreno, San Elizario. Moreno won the Region 1-4A Championship in the 800 meters (1:54.37) and was second in the 1,600 meters (4:28.91). He is seeded No. 1 in the 800 meters and No. 9 in the 1,600.

Jose Guardado, Riverside. Guardado won the Region 1-4A Championship long jump with a mark of 22 feet, 9 inches. He is ranked No. 7 heading into state.

Angel Munoz, Riverside. Munoz was second in the long jump (22 feet, 6.5 inches and was third in the 300-meter hurdles in 39.23 at the Region 1-4A Championship. He earned a wild card berth in the 300 hurdles. Munoz is ranked No. 7 in the long jump and No. 8 in the hurdles.

Tornillo’s Daniel Romero will compete in two races on Thursday, the 3,200 meters and the 1,600 meters.

Class 3A

Daniel Romero, Tornillo. Romero finished second in 1,600 and 3,200 meters at the Region 1-3A Championship.  He ran the 1,600 meters in 4:27.32 and the 3,200 meters in 9:37.48. He will be seeded No. 4 in the 1,600 and No. 5 in the 3,200 at state.

The fifth week of the track and field season resulted in two city best times and marks the Fred Loya/Mile Spilt Invitational at Eastwood.

Top performances include:

Parkland’s 800-meter relay team of Kaleb Martinez, Demarion Daniel Crest, Joseph W. Gomez and Lincoln Juardo improved its own city best time for the third straight week and raced to a 1:28.15 at the Fred Loya/Mile Split Invitational at Eastwood.

El Dorado senior Dezmond Gonzalez improved on his city best long jump, leaping 22 feet, 2.50 inches at the Fred Loya/Mile Split Invitational at Eastwood.

High School Boys Cross Country Poll: Final

San Elizario finished third place in Class 4A in 2022. It is the school’s ninth consecutive state trophy.

Top 10

1. Franklin: The Cougars advanced to the Class 6A State Championship for the first time and placed seventh. Senior Diego Flores had a top 20 performance, finishing 18th in 16:12.4. Franklin won its first district championship and advanced to state by placing fourth at the Region 1-6A meet where three runners placed in the top 16 – junior Matthew Engle (10th in 15:48.4), Diego Flores (15th, 15:58.20) and senior DenovanEstrada, (16th, 15:58.60).

2. Coronado: The T-Birds finished sixth at the Region 1-6A Championship. Senior Luis Pastor won the regional title in 15:09.7 and placed tenth at state in 16:05.2.

3. San Elizario: The Eagles picked up another Class 4A state medal, finishing third. Senior Chris Moreno, who won the Region 1-4A title in 15:37.1, paced the team at state, placing sixth in 16:16.9. Junior Julian Guerra had a top 6 performance at regionals (16:01.6).

4. Eastwood: The Troopers finished second at the District 1-6A Championship and eighth at the Region 1-6A meet. Junior Alex Flores was the top Eastwood runner at regionals finishing 35th in 16:29.90.

5. El Paso High: The Tigers won the District 1-5A Championship and placed eighth at regionals where sophomore Miles Westbrook was 14th (16:18.5) and junior Leo Valenzuela was 17th in 16:22.5 and advanced to state. At state, Westbrook was 53rd in 16:41.0 and Valenzuela was 80th in 17:05.7.

6. Pebble Hills: Although the team did not advance to regionals, senior Omer Ibrahim, the District 1-6A champion, was third in the region (15:23.2) and fifth at the state meet (15:50.6).

7. Tornillo: Three runners advanced to the Class 3A state championship. After finishing second at regionals (15:58.9), senior Angel Torres was fourth at state in 16:13.1. Junior Romero was third at regionals (16:14.4) and 55th at state (17:39.1) and senior Bryan Castaneda was 63rd in 17:44.1.

8. Americas: The Trailblazers finished fifth in the District 1-6A Championship.

9. Chapin: The Huskies finished the season 14th in Region 1-5A. Braulio Torres was the top Chapin runner at regionals finishing 35th in 16:53.60.

10. Hanks: The Knightswere 18th at the Region 1-5A. Senior Alejandro Tarin earned a bronze medal finishing the regional course in 15:07.9. He would place 14th at the Class 5A State Championship in 15:57.2.

It was Franklin’s third trip to state in four years. The Cougars future looks bright with freshman Emily Orr and Abigail Pinon, sophomore Sophia Keiser and junior Victoria Hoyt returning next season. Seniors Abby Barraza, Alyssa Laspada and Sofia Camacho provided the leadership the past four years.

2. Eastwood: The Troopers finished second in District 1-6A and ninth at the Region 1-6A Championship. The team was led by sophomore Adelynn Rodriguez won the district title, was 12th at regionals and 43rd at state.

3. Pebble Hills: The Spartans placed third at the District 1-6A Championship and for the first time in school history, advanced to the regionals where the team finished 18th. Natalia Martinez Lopezwas the lone senior, so it appears Pebble Hills is prepared for the 2023 season with juniors Carolina Zarrabal and Natalie Franco and freshman Aubrey Arsenault.

4. Montwood: The Rams placed fourth at the District 1-6A Championship but two runners – senior Kassandra Jimenez and freshman Mia Hairston – advanced to regionals. Jimenez was 23rd and Hairston was 56th.

5. El Paso High: The Tigers won the District 1-5A Championship and were the top El Paso team at regionals, placing ninth. The young Tigers top runners were junior Andrea Castillo, senior Jezarae Valenzuela, freshman Clarissa Castillo and junior Sofia Ramirez. Castillo was 31st at regionals.

6. Canutillo: The Eagles finished second at the District 1-5A Championship and 16th at regionals. The Eagles were led by senior Natalie Rivera, freshman Nevaeh Escobedo and senior Jennifer Najar. Rivera was the top El Paso runner at regionals finishing 22nd in 20:01.40.

7. Hanks: The Knights won the District 2-5A Championship and finished 17th at regionals. The Knights are young and were led by junior Destinee Loeza, sophomore Elizabeth Aguirre and a pair of freshman Lily Arias and Alina Levario. Hanks has served notice for great things to come.

8. Soccoro: The Bulldogs finished the season with a fifth-place finish at the District 1-6A Championship with two runners in the top 20 – Nadine Vilaasana (18th, 21:46.09) and Mea Workman (19th, 21:52.90).

9. Chapin: The Huskies finished third at the District 1-5A Championship, earning them a berth to the Region 1-5A Championship. The team was led by senior Gianny Correa won the district individual title in 19:36.58 and sophomore Rebecca Duran. Correa was 23rd at regionals in 20:01.40

10. Eastlake: The Falcons finished sixth at the District 1-6A Championship. Its top runner was freshman Chloe Del Real.
