High School Girl’s Cross Country Poll: Week 3

Every Wednesday, El Paso Running will utilize a point system to highlight El Paso’s top girls cross country runners.

The system is as follows: In a race of less than 150 runners, first place gets 10 points, second gets 9 points all the way down to 10th place which gets 1 point. For meets with between 150 to 300 runners, double points will be rewarded meaning 20 points for first, 19 for second all the way down to 1 point for 20th. For every additional 150 runners, another 10 runners will be included in the points.

For those who like raw times, we also list the Top 25 girls race times and the meets and dates that they occurred.

Clint ISD Invitational: 8 a.m. Aug. 30, at Mountain View High School.Anthony, Bel Air, Canutillo, Di Vinci,Eastlake, Hanks, Horizon, Jefferson,Loretto, Lydia Patterson, Mountain View,Pebble Hills, Riverside, Tornillo.

Eastwood’s Stars & Strides Invitational at the Eastside Sports Complex featured 17 teams and 156 runners.

Top 10

1. Eastwood:  Eastwood was second at the 17-team, 156-runner Stars & Strides Invitational at the Eastside Sports Complex. The Trooper placed four runners in the top 11 to finish with 54 points, 9 behind Los Alamos, N.M. Eastwood freshman Kylie Vega was third in 18:26.45, sophomore Natalia Gomez was sixth in 18:56.81, sophomore Carlee Caraveo was eighth in 19:04.84 and freshman Ava Ellison was 11th in 19:30.93. Eastwood will race at the Socorro Invitational at Underwood Golf Course on Saturday.

2. Franklin: The Cougars were third at the Stars & Strides Invitational with 76 points. Senior Emily Orr won the individual race in 18:03.64. Sophomore Sophia Barraza was 15th in 20:04.37 and senior Abigail Pinon was 18th in 20:18.42. The Cougars will not race this weekend.

3. Pebble Hills: The Spartans went on the road and finished seventh at the Macen Holderman Invitational Saturday in Rio Rancho, N.M. Amina Delgadillo was the top finisher, placing 29th in 20:48.8. It was a season best for Delgadillo. The team will not race this weekend.

4. Americas: The Trailblazers finished tenth at the Macen Holderman Invitational Saturday in Rio Rancho. Junior Carli Day lead Americas, placing 28th in 20:46.5, a season best. Americas will race at the Socorro Invitational at Underwood Golf Course on Saturday.

5. Eastlake: The Falcons placed fourth at the Stars & Strides Invitational with 122 points. Eastlake had three runners in the top 25 — freshman Ave Molina was 12th (19:42.62), sophomore Vitalia Hernandez was 17th in 20:17.34 and senior Elizabeth Bustillos was 22nd in 20:31.99. Eastlake is scheduled to race at the Clint ISD Invitational at Mountain View High School on Saturday.

6. Hanks: The Knights were fifth at the Stars & Strides Invitational with 175 points. Senior Ashlyn McMillan was second overall in a season best 18:20.10. Hanks will race the Clint ISD Invitational at Mountain View High School on Saturday.

7. Socorro: The Bulldogs were seventh at the Stars & Strides Invitational with 178 points. Its top runner was junior Addy Carbone (28th, 20:52.18). The team is expected to run at its own invitational at Underwood Golf Course on Saturday.

8. Coronado: The T-Birds were eighth at the Stars & Strides Invitational with 217 points. Its top runner was sophomore Ayana Le Than who was 25th in 20:48.39. Coronado will race at the Socorro Invitational at Underwood Golf Course on Saturday.

9. Montwood: The Rams finished 14th at the Macen Holderman Invitational Saturday in Rio Rancho. Mia Hairston was 10th in 20:03.8, a season best.

10. El Paso High: El Paso makes its season debut after its ninth-place finish at the Stars & Strides Invitational. Freshman Alejandra Walker was the top runner, finishing 46th in 21:35.21.

Dropped out: Chapin, Fabens.

On the brink: Del Valle, Canutillo.

Hanks senior Ashlyn McMillan was second overall in a season best 18:20.10.

My love of running began with my son Deric. His passion and talent for distance running opened my eyes to a sport I never imaged I would embrace with such enthusiasm. As a journalist at the El Paso Times, I was the lead writer for cross country and track for several years and I was able to tell the stories of these amazing unsung athletes. Never a runner myself, I decided to change that when I turned 50 in 2016 when I trained for my first 5K. I've been running ever since and I love every minute of it - well - sort of.
