High School Boy’s Cross Country Poll: Final

Every Thursday, El Paso Running will utilize a point system to highlight El Paso’s top boy’s cross country runners.

The system is as follows: In a race of less than 150 runners, first place gets 10 points, second gets 9 points all the way down to 10th place which gets 1 point. For meets with between 150 to 300 runners, double points will be rewarded meaning 20 points for first, 19 for second all the way down to 1 point for 20th. For every additional 150 runners, another 10 runners will be included in the points.

For those who like raw times, we also list the Top 25 boys race times and the meets and dates that they occurred.

Top 10

1. Eastwood: The Troopers end the season as the top team in the city after finishing eighth in Conference 6A at the UIL State Championship with 221 points. Junior Aidan Torres finished in fifth-place finish making him the third El Paso runner to earn a top 5 state finish at the 6A level. Last year, Pebble Hills’ Omer Ibrahim was fifth in 15:50.6 and Eastwood’s Daniel Bernal finished third in 2016 in 14:49.72. Other top 100 runners were senior Sulliman Rodriguez (46th, 15:56.6), senior Leo Espino (82nd, 16:16.0) and junior Luke Cruz (86th, 16:18.1).

2. Franklin: The Cougars, who made state for the second straight year, was tenth with 243 points. Its top 100 runners were senior Matthew Engle (18th, 15:29.6), senior Juan Leal (40th, 15:52.5) and senior Gabriel Uranga (89th, 16:19.2). Engle;s top 20 finish earned him All State honors.

3. San Elizario: The Eagles had four runners in the top 50 and finished fourth in Conference 4A at the State Championship with 138 points, 11 points shy of a bronze medal. Three San Elizario runners earned All State honors – senior Angel Maese (12th, 16:05.8), senior Julian Guerra (13th, 16:16.9) and sophomore Antonio Arreola (21st, 16:24.5). Arreola had a city top 25 time and personal best. Senior Bryan Hernandez was 39th in 16:47.6.

4. El Paso High: The Tigers finished eighth at state in Conference 5A at the with 206 points. Junior Miles Westbrook earned All State honors finishing 15th in 15:48.0. Top 100 runners were senior Leo Valenzuela (43rd, 16:19.9), junior Lorenzo Shields (94th, 17:00.1), senior Aydan Lugo (96th, 17:01.1), junior Ulysses O’Rourke (97th, 17:02.1) and senior Joaquin Moya (98th, 17:03.8).

5. Coronado: The T-Birds were eighth at the Region 1-6A championship. However, senior Edgar Valles competed in the Conference 6A state championship and finished 31st in 15:46.7.

6. Pebble Hills: The Spartans finished fourth at the District 1-6A Championship. Senior Mark Barajas advanced to state and finished 60th in 16:03.6.

7. Chapin: The Huskies finished its season finishing 10th in Region 1-5A with 312 points.

8. Burges: The Mustangs finished its season with a 12th-place finish at regionals.

9. Del Valle: The District 2-5A champions finished 17th at the Region 1-5A championship.

10. Bel Air: The Highlanders placed 19th at the Region 1-5A championship.

The Franklin girls end the season where they started, No. 1 in the El Paso Running Poll.

Top 10

1. Franklin: The Cougars finished ninth in Conference 6A at the UIL State Championship with 244 points. Sophomore Emily Orr was the top El Paso runner, finishing in 27th-place in 18 minutes, 20.8 seconds. This marked the fourth time in five years Franklin has advanced to state. Three other runners finished in the top 100 – junior Sophia Keiser (79th, 19:13.8), senior Brooke McCune (95th, 19:29.3) and sophomore Abigail Pinon (98th, 19:35.8). Junior Sienna Zarate had a city top 25 time and personal best 20:10.4.

2. Eastwood: Junior Adelynn Rodriguez finished 38th in Conference 6A at the state championship with a time of 18:33.7. This was her third trip to state. The Troopers finished 15th at the Region 1-6A Championship.

3. Chapin:  The Huskies, who were making their first appearance at state since 2008, finished 14th in Conference 5A with 323 points. They had three in the top 100 – junior Ava Dennis (72nd, 19:50.9), senior Biviana Garcia (74th, 19:53.6) and freshman Jocelynne Diaz Torres (96th, 20:12.3). All three were city top 25 times and personal bests.

Seven El Paso runners return from UIL Cross Country Championships with All-State honors

Seven El Paso runners return from the 2023 UIL Cross Country Championships in Round Rock with All-State honors.

San Elizario had the best finish of the six El Paso teams competing at state, placing fourth in the Class 4A championship with 138 points, 11 behind third-place Boerne.

Three San Elizario runners earned All State honors – senior Angel Maese (12th, 16:05.8), senior Julian Guerra (13th, 16:16.9) and sophomore Antonio Arreola (21st, 16:24.5).

San Elizario had the best team finish all the El Paso area teams. They finished fourth in Class 4A.

Also earning All State recognition were Eastwood junior Aidan Torres (fifth, 15:10.1), Americas junior Diego Romero (13th, 15:22.4) and Franklin senior Matthew Engle (18th, 15:29.6) in Class 6A and El Paso junior Miles Westbrook (15th, 15:48.0) in Class 5A.

None of the six teams – Franklin boys and girls, Eastwood boys from Class 6A; El Paso High boys and Chapin girls from Class 5A and the San Elizario boys from Class 4A – had podium finishes.

Eastwood’s boys ended its UIL season finishing eighth in the state with 221 points.

For the fifth straight year, Southlake Carroll won the 6A crown with 48 points followed by Austin Vandegrift (69) and McKinny Boyd (164).

Franklin was tenth with 243.

Franklin runners were Engle, senior Juan Leal (40th, 15:52.5), senior Gabriel Uranga (89th, 16:19.2), sophomore Jacob Martinez (103,  16:24.0), senior Sebastian Gonzalez (120, 16:38.3), senior Adan Castillo (121, 16:39.1) and sophomore Sebastian Mendez (129, 16:50.1).

Coronado senior Edgar Valles was 31st in 15:46.7 and Pebble Hills senior was 60th in 16:03.6.

The individual state champion was Southlake Carroll sophomoreCaden Leonard (15:00.1), followed by Austin Vandegrift junior Hudson Haley (15:04.2) and Bridgeland junior Benjamin Montgomery (15:06.7).

Flower Mound won the title with 41 points followed by Southlake Carroll (77) and The Woodlands (133).

Its top runners were junior Ava Dennis (72nd, 19:50.9), senior Biviana Garcia (74th, 19:53.6), freshman Jocelynne Diaz Torres (96th, 20:12.3), junior Rebecca Duran (119, 20:41.3), freshman Abigail Sanchez (133, 21:02.0) and senior Ava Maldonado (151, 22:44.0).

Lucas Lovejoy won the state title with 40 points followed by Aledo (81) and Georgetown (131).

Boerne Champion sophomore won the individual title in 16:25.5 followed by senior Isabel Conde De Frankenberg from Cedar Park (17:34.2) and Lucas Lovejoy senior Sara Morefield (17:54.4).

San Elizario senior Kylee Pardo placed 56th in the two-mile run in 12:30.2.

Class 4A

San Elizario finished fourth with 138 points.

Canyon win the team title with 56 points followed by La Feria (105) and Boerne (127).

Aside from Maese, Guerra and Arreola, other San Elizario state runners include senior Bryan Hernandez (39th, 16:47.6), senior Gustavo Salazar (116, 18:03.0), sophomore Alexander Cano (131, 18:31.6) and freshman Jorel Miramontes (138, 18:40.7).

Austin junior Pedro Jimenez was 75th in 17:17.0 at his first state championship.

Angel Sanchez, a senior from FW Diamond Hill-Jarvis, won in 15:09.9 4 followed by Canyon senior Alex Niemiec (15:18.7) and Anna junior

Bryce Denton (15:21.6).

On the girl’s side, San Elizario senior Kylee Pardo placed 56th in the two-mile run in 12:30.2 and Fabens’ freshman Alexia Martinez was 66th with a time of 12:36.9 and her teammate freshman Angel Quinonez finished 112th with a time of 13:17.6.


Canyon sophomore won the state championship in 11:08.5 followed by Canyon Randall freshman Nayomi Granados (11:17.6) freshman Brooke French, also out of Canyon Randall (11:17.6).

Canyon Randall won the team championship with 50 points followed by Fredericksburg (61) and Salado (103).

With regionals in the rearview, the focus is on state

The following girl’s teams and runners have advanced:

Class 6A: Franklin and Eastwood’s Adelynn Rodriguez.

Class 5A: Chapin.

Class 4A: Fabens’ Alexia Martinez and Angel Quinonez, also San Elizario’s Kylee Pardo.

Franklin and Eastwood will represent El Paso at the Class 6A State Championship.

Holding to form, with two notable additions, El Paso will be well represented at the UIL State Cross Country Championship Friday and Saturday in Round Rock.

The Franklin, Eastwood and San Elizario boys and the Franklin girls are back on familiar ground, earning spots to the state championship. However, Class 5A upstarts, the Chapin girls and the El Paso High boys, will be joining them as the state’s best teams and individuals race for state glory.

Also running as individuals out of Class 6A will be Americas junior Diego Romeo, Pebble Hills senior Mark Barajas, Coronado’s senior Edgar Valles and Eastwood junior Adelynn Rodriguez.

Austin junior Pedro Jimenez will race in the Class 4A division along with a pair of freshmen from Fabens, Alexia Martinez and Angel Quinonez, and San Elizario senior Kylee Pardo on the girl’s side.

Boys

Class 6A

Franklin finished third at regionals behind with 11 points and Eastwood was fourth with 129. Southlake Carroll took top honors for the sixth consecutive time with 50 points and McKinney Boyd was second with 86.

Coronado was eighth with 212 points.

Franklin is going back to state for the second straight year after its top five runners all finished the regional course in the top 50 including two in the top 15 – seniors Matthew Engle (seventh, 15:22.30) and Juan Leal (12th, 15:31.9, a personal best).

Engle earned All-Region honors. He is the top 6A runner returning to state. Last year, he was 59th in 16:38.8.

Senior Gabriel Uranga was 27th in 16:09.5, sophomore Sebastian Mendez was 42nd in 16:20.2 (a personal best) and senior Adan Castillo was 46th in 16:23.2.

The team is looking to improve on its seventh-place finish.

Eastwood returns to state after missing out last year for the first time in eight years. This will be schools tenth trip in 12 years to state.

Junior Aidan Torres had an impressive regional was second with a time of 15 minutes, 16.10 seconds.

The Troopers earned a spot back to state, finishing fourth in the Region 1-6A.

Along with Torres’ silver medal, senior Sulliman Rodriguez was 20th in 15:58.0, senior Leo Espino was 30th in 16:12.5 and junior Luke Cruz was 45th in 16:21.7.

Also competing are Americas’ junior Diego Romeo, Pebble Hills senior Mark Barajas and Coronado senior Edgar Valles.

Romero earned All Region 1-6A honors, finishing eighth at regionals in 15:26.20, Barajas was 14th in 15:42.0 and Valles was 15th in 15:42.8.

El Paso High won the Region 1-5A team championship for the first time since 1997.

Class 5A

Junior Miles Westbrook earned All-Region honors with a fourth-place finish in 15:44.10. Senior Leo Valenzuela was 21st in 16:34.80 followed by junior Ulysses O’Rourke (27th, 16:50.60), senior Aydan Lugo (35th, 17:02.00) and junior Lorenzo Shields (50th, 17:11.5).

Westbrook was 53rd at last year’s championship, finishing in 16:41.0 and Valenzuela was 80th in 17:05.7.

San Elizario is headed back to state for the tenth straight year.

Class 4A

San Elizario is headed back to state for the tenth year in a row after finishing second at regionals with 63 points. Canyon won the title with 20 points.

San Elizario has finished in the top three in nine straight years at the state meet, six of which have been state championships.

The Eagles had four runners earn all-region honors – senior Jullian Guerra, who finished fourth in 16:18.79 and senior Angel Maese (fifth at 16:40.20), sophomore Antonio Arreola (seventh, 16:58.50) and senior Bryan Hernandez (tenth, 17:04.20).

In the past nine years, San Elizario has won six state championships and finished third three times, including last year behind Canyon and La Feria.

Guerra finished last year’s state meet in 16:59.4 and Maese finished in 17:20.6.

Austin sophomore Pedro Jimenez will be racing in his first state championship after placing 18th at regionals with a time of 17:26.80.

For the second consecutive year, Franklin will represent Region 1 at the State Championship.

Girls

Class 6A

For the second consecutive year, Franklin will represent Region 1 at the State Championship. It is their fourth state appearance in five years.

The Cougars qualified as the fourth team from the Region of Doom, scoring 143 points. Southlake Carroll won the regional title, followed by Flower Found and Northwest Nelson.

Sophomore Emily Orr earned All Region honors, placing fifth with a time of 18:25.70.

Also at regionals, senior Brooke McCune was 36th in 19:26.4, sophomore Abigail Pinon was 39th in 19:29.8, junior Sophia Keiser was 46th in 19:37.2 and senior Victoria Hoyt was 50th in 19:41.5.

Franklin was seventh at state last year. Pinon had the best time at state last year, completing the race in 63rd place in 19:52.5.

Eastwood’s Adelynn Rodriguez

Eastwood junior Adelynn Rodriguez is headed back to state for her third time after placing eighth with a time of 18:34.20 to earn All Region honors.

Rodriguez was the top El Paso runner at state last year, finishing 43rd in 19:25.8.

The Chapin Huskies finished fourth at the Region 1-5A Championship.

Class 5A

The Chapin Huskies finished fourth at the Region 1-5A Championship and advanced to state.

Two runners, juniors Rebecca Duran and Ava Dennis, had top 50 performances. Duran ran a personal best 19:18.50 and placed 13th while Dennis was 34th in 20:22.60. Freshman Jocelynne Diaz Torres also had a strong showing, finishing 51st in 20:45.5.

It’s the first time an El Paso 5A team has advanced to state since 2018 when Eastwood finished 11th and the first time Chapin has been represented since 2017 when Skyler Goodman finished 31st in 18:58.39.

Class 4A   

Fabens’ freshman Alexia Martinez earned a trip to state with a fourth-place regional finish in 12:26.50.

Martinez’ teammate and fellow freshman Angel Quinonez is also headed to state after a 22nd-place finish in 13:09.90.

San Elizario senior Kylee Pardo will join them after finishing 20th in 13:06.50.
