High School Boy’s Cross Country Poll: Final

Every Thursday, El Paso Running will utilize a point system to highlight El Paso’s top boy’s cross country runners.

The system is as follows: In a race of less than 150 runners, first place gets 10 points, second gets 9 points all the way down to 10th place which gets 1 point. For meets with between 150 to 300 runners, double points will be rewarded meaning 20 points for first, 19 for second all the way down to 1 point for 20th. For every additional 150 runners, another 10 runners will be included in the points.

For those who like raw times, we also list the Top 25 boys race times and the meets and dates that they occurred.

Eastwood was second at the Regional 1-6A Championship, fourth at state, 14 points short of a bronze team medal.

Top 10

1. Eastwood: After finishing second at the Regional 1-6A Championship, the Troopers marched on to the UIL State Cross Country Championship and placed fourth, 14 points short of a bronze team medal. Senior Danny Torres was fourth at regionals (15:14.8) and tenth at state (   15:19.6) to earn All Region and All State honors. Top 30 state runners were senior Marcos Madrid (17th, 15:46.6), sophomore Noah Loweree (21st 15:54.0), junior Job Desantos (24th, 15:57.4) and senior Luke Cruz (31st, 16:03.6).

2. Franklin: The Cougars’ season ended at the Region 1-6A Championship, placing seventh. Its top runner was junior Sebastian Mendez (30th, 16:22.6). Other top 50 runners were junior Fransisco Medina (39th, 16:34.8) and junior Jacob Martinez (48th, 16:45.5).

3. Coronado: The T-Birds finished 11th at the Regional 1-6A Championship. Its top runner was junior Humberto Serna who was 29th in 16:22.1 Other top 50 runners were junior Rodrigo Pinales (41st, 16:37.8) and  Zyler Garnica (45th, 16:40.4).

4. Burges: The Mustangs finished sixth at the Class 5A Class 5A UIL State Championship. Burges had a top 20 state runners – senior Malin Arnoldussen who was 19th in 16:06.6 – and a top 35 runner, senior Jacob Yeager who finished 34th in 16:19.7. At regionals, Arnoldussen was 12th in 16:31.5, Yeager was 24th in 16:56.0, senior Carlos Chavez was 30th in 17:04.6 and senior Isais Gaytan was 39th in 17:22.0.

5. San Elizario: The Eagles missed out on another trip to state, falling five points short of advancing. San Elizario finished fifth at the Regional 1-4A Championship with 161 points, however, junior Antonio Arreola did qualify to state, placing fourth at regionals in 16:15.1. He went on to earn All State, finishing 14th in 16:07.2. Other top runners at regionals were sophomore Jorel Miramontes was 29th in 17:11.8, freshman Angel Richarte finished 41st in 17:33.9 and freshman Daniel Maese was 44th in 17:36.8.

6. Pebble Hills: The Spartans finished the season at district.

7. Austin: The Panthers moved up a spot after its sixth-place finish at the Region 1-4A Championship. Austin had two top 15 regional runners – senior Pedro Jimenez (10th, 16:36.4) and junior Eirik Arredondo (13th, 16:44.6) – which qualified them to state. Arredondo finished 34th in 16:41.3 and Jimenez was 39th in 16:45.2 at the Class 4A state championship.

8. Chapin: The Huskies return to the top 10 after finishing 12th at the Region 1-5A Championship. Senior Braulio Torres finished ninth in 16:22.2 and earned All Region honors a state berth. He ended up 21st at state in 16:08.3. Freshman Andrew Truax was 33rd in 17:12.8 at regionals.

9. El Paso High: The Tigers drop two spots after finishing 14th at the Region 1-5A Championship. Senior Miles Westbrook was second in 15:51.3 to advance to state where he earned the bronze medal and All State honors in 15:39.2.

10. Hanks: Hanks ended its season 16th at the Region 1-5A Championship. It’s top runner was freshman Mateo Diaz who was 54th in 17:37.1.

Dropped out: Americas.

On the brink: None.

El Paso High senior Miles Westbrook was fifth at the Class 5A State Championship and Americas Diego Romero was seventh. Both earned All State honors.

Eastwood senior Adelynn Rodriguez was ninth at the Class 6A state championship and Franklin junior Emily Orr was tenth in 18:12.7.

Top 10

1. Franklin: The Cougars ended the season one spot away from qualifying for its fifth trip to state in the past six years, finishing fifth at the Region 1-6A championship in Lubbock. Junior Emily Orr advanced to state after placing seventh in 18:20.1. Orr ended her season with a 10th-place All State performance, finishing in 18:12.7 in Round Rock. Other top 50 regional runners were freshman Sophia Barraza (37, 19:45.3), junior Abigail Pinon (44, 19:57.1) and senior Sophia Keiser (46, 19:57.8).    

2. Eastwood: The Troopers finished eighth at the Region 1-6A championship in Lubbock. Senior Adelynn Rodriguez was sixth in 18:05.7 and advanced to state where she finished ninth in 18:06.4 to pick up All State honors.

3. Americas: The Trailblazers were eighth at the Region 1-5A championship in Lubbock. Senior Lexee Salas was 10th in 19:28.3 and advanced to the state championship where she was 55th in 19:47.5. At regionals, two runners finished in the top 50 – sophomore Carli Day was 39th in 20:56.1 and junior Gisele Abascal was 46th in 21:08.6.

4. Chapin: The Huskies move up two spots after finishing 10th at the Region 1-5A championship in Lubbock. It’s top two runners – senior Rebecca Duran (15th, 19:57.0) and sophomore Jocelynne Diaz Torres (18th, 20:03.6) – qualified to state where Duran was 34th in 19:27.0 and Diaz Torres was 64th in 19:54.3.    

5. Hanks: The Knights dropped one spot its 12th place finish at the Region 1-5A championship in Lubbock. Hanks had two runners in the top 50 – senior Elizabeth Aguirre (36th, 20:46.5) and junior Ashlyn McMillan (47th, 21:09.4).

6. Socorro: The Bulldogs finished 19th in the Region 1-6A Championship in Lubbock. It’s top runner was freshman Crystal Delgado who was 73rd in 20:30.5.

7. Pebble Hills: The Spartans finished its season in fourth at the District 1-6A Championship.

8. Eastlake: The Falcons season ended at district. However freshman Vitalia Hernandez advance to the Region 1-6A Championship in Lubbock and finished 30th in 19:25.2.

9. El Paso High: The Tigers finished the season 19th at the Region 1-5A Championship in Lubbock. Its top runner was sophomore Sofia Speer was 72nd in 22:03.4.

10. Riverside: Riverside was 16th at the Region 1-4A Championship in Lubbock. Its top runner was sophomore Dana Gonzalez who was 60th in 13:48.0 (two-mile).

Dropped out: San Elizario.
