Boys Track and Field Top 10 Times and Distances After Regionals

El Paso’s boys track and field athletes saved their best for last as nine city-best marks and times were set at the Region 1-6A and Region 1-5A meets.

Coronado senior Grant Levesque set two city-best marks – racing to a 14.27 in the 10 hurdles, good for silver at the Region 1-6A championship, and vaulted 16-feet, 3-inches, good for a regional gold medal.

Other top performances were:

*Michael Abeyta, Hanks, 1:53.54 in the 800 at the Region 1-5A championship, good for a regional gold medal.

*Infante Jones, Parkland, 39.12  in the 300 hurdles at the Region 1-5A championship. He placed third at regionals.

*Donta Hayes, Parkland, 46-feet, 11 inches in the triple jump at the 5A regional. He won silver at regionals.

*Omajuwa Etiwe, Franklin, 46.95 in the 400 at the Region 1-6A meet. He won gold.

*Brandon Seagreaves, Cathedral, 9:16.25 at the TAPPS 6A State Championship where he won gold.

*Franklin’s 800-meter relay team of Chris Martinez, Angel Jurado, Joshua Massaquoi and Ian Tharp, 1:28.45 at the Region 1-6A meet.

*Franklin’s 1600-meter relay team of  Ian Tharp, Ethan Bustillos, Fernando Morales, Omajuwa Etiwe), 3:19.42 at the regional meet.

My love of running began with my son Deric. His passion and talent for distance running opened my eyes to a sport I never imaged I would embrace with such enthusiasm. As a journalist at the El Paso Times, I was the lead writer for cross country and track for several years and I was able to tell the stories of these amazing unsung athletes. Never a runner myself, I decided to change that when I turned 50 in 2016 when I trained for my first 5K. I've been running ever since and I love every minute of it - well - sort of.
