Boy’s Track and Field Top 10 Times and Distances: Week 6

There were six season-best performances this week at the Montwood Invitational at Socorro’s Student Activities Complex, the Cotton Valley Relays in Fabens and the Parkland Invitational.

Eastlake’s Adam Herrera bettered his city-best 400-meter time finishing in49.62 at the Montwood Invitational.

Franklin’s Stephen Carreto ran a 39.08 in the 300-meter hurdles at the Montwood Invitational.

Americas’ Caleb Stewart leaped 23-feet, 1.75 inches to improve his own mark in the long jump at the Montwood Invitational.

Irvin’s Patrick Leak also improved on his own mark in the triple jump, leaping 45 feet, 11 inches at the Fabens Cotton Valley Relays.

Also at the Cotton Valley Relays, Del Valle’s Austin Lara bested his own mark in the pole vault, vaulting himself 14 feet over the bar.

Parkland senior Kenneth Golston raced to a 1:57.00 in the 800 meters at the Parkland Invitational.

Franklin won the team title at the Montwood Invitational with 177 points followed by Eastwood (128), Americas (93), Montwood (54), Pebble Hills (51), Eastlake (41), El Dorado (39) and Socorro (24).

Parkland won its own invitational with 165 points followed by Andress (104), Burges (101), Bel Air (72), Chapin (65), Hanks (44) and Jefferson (35.5).

San Elizario won the Fabens Cotton Valley Relays with 179 points followed by Del Valle (115), Coronado (105), Mt. View (72), Irvin (58), Clint (54), Fabens (33), Tornillo (25) and Ft. Hancock (3).

Riverside won the Bowie Invitational with 199 points followed by Austin (112), El Paso (82), Horizon (74.5), Canutillo (68) and Ysleta (58.5).

My love of running began with my son Deric. His passion and talent for distance running opened my eyes to a sport I never imaged I would embrace with such enthusiasm. As a journalist at the El Paso Times, I was the lead writer for cross country and track for several years and I was able to tell the stories of these amazing unsung athletes. Never a runner myself, I decided to change that when I turned 50 in 2016 when I trained for my first 5K. I've been running ever since and I love every minute of it - well - sort of.
