High School Boy’s Cross Country Poll: Week 7

Every Thursday, El Paso Running will utilize a point system to highlight El Paso’s top boy’s cross country runners.

The system is as follows: In a race of less than 150 runners, first place gets 10 points, second gets 9 points all the way down to 10th place which gets 1 point. For meets with between 150 to 300 runners, double points will be rewarded meaning 20 points for first, 19 for second all the way down to 1 point for 20th. For every additional 150 runners, another 10 runners will be included in the points.

For those who like raw times, we also list the Top 25 boys race times and the meets and dates that they occurred.

Desert Twilight: 8 p.m. Friday at Toka Sticks Golf Course in Mesa, Ariz. Austin, Coronado, Bel Air, Immanuel, Eastwood, Socorro, Burges.

Top 10

1. Eastwood: The Troopers had five runners in the top 10 to win the Clint/Riverside Invitational at Clint High School with 31 points. Junior Jonah Herd Jr. led the team, finishing third in 17:48.13. Senior Adrian Chavez was fourth (17:50.35), senior Nathan Arreola was sixth (17:58.24), junior Evan Chacon was eighth (18:20.57) and sophomore Adan Ceniceros was tenth in 18:33.84. Eastwood will race the Desert Twilight Friday at Toka Sticks Golf Course in Mesa, Ariz.         

2. Pebble Hills: The Spartans finished 21st at the 33-team, 265-runner Gold Division of the McNeil Invitational at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock and move up two spots. Its top runners where senior Ameen Ibrahim (63rd, 16:40.40) and junior Gavin Cottle (119th, 17:05.90). The team will now prepare for the District 1-6A Championship Oct. 10 at Horizon Golf Course.

3. Franklin: The Cougars were 23rd at the 33-team, 265-runner Gold Division of the McNeil Invitational at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. It’s top two runners were junior Fransisco Medina (53rd, 16:29.80) and junior Sebastian Mendez (68th, 16:43.30). The team will now prepare for the District 1-6A Championship Oct. 10 at Horizon Golf Course.

4. Coronado: The T-Birds are peaking at the time. Coronado won its own invitational last week at the Don Haskins Recreation Center and moved up two spots. Junior Humberto Serna won his third individual title in 17:34.34. Junior Rodrigo Pinales was second in 17:43.32 and senior Max Sandhu was fourth in 18:26.21. Coronado is scheduled to race the Desert Twilight Friday at Toka Sticks Golf Course in Mesa, Ariz.            

5. Burges: The Mustangs drop spot after its second-place finish at the Coronado Invitational. Burges had four runners in the top nine including senior Jesus Gastelum-Bustamante (third, 17:43.43), senior Isaias Gaytan (sixth, 18:56.35), senior Christian Baca (seventh, 19:02.36) and senior Iskander Vargas (ninth, 19:07.58). Burges is scheduled to race the Desert Twilight Friday at Toka Sticks Golf Course in Mesa, Ariz.

6. San Elizario: The Eagles finished second at the Clint/Riverside Invitational Saturday at Clint High School after placing two runners in the top 5. Junior Antonio Arreola was second in 17:40.06 and junior Alexander Cano was fifth in 17:58.02. Freshman Angel Richarte was ninth in 18:32.56. San Elizario will now prepare for the District 2-4A Championship Oct. 10 at Horizon Golf Course.

7. El Paso High: The Tigers top two runners – seniors Miles Westbrook and Ulysses O’Rourke – ran in the Gold Division of the McNeil Invitational at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. Westbrook was seventh in 15:30.90 and O’Rourke was 104th in 16:58.50. The team will now prepare for the District 1-5A Championship Oct. 10 at Horizon Golf Course.

8. Austin: The Panthers were third at the Clint/Riverside Invitational Saturday at Clint High School, placing two runners in the top 7. Senior Pedro Jimenez won his first event of the season in 17:32.80. Junior Erick Arredondo was seventh in 18:11.46. Austin is scheduled to race the Desert Twilight Friday at Toka Sticks Golf Course in Mesa, Ariz

9. Hanks: The Knights did not race last week nor are they schedule to run this weekend as they prepare for the District 2-5A Championship Oct. 10 at Horizon Golf Course.

10. Del Valle: The Conquistadores make its season debut after its third-place finish at the Coronado Invitational at the Don Haskins Recreation Center. Senior Damian Espinoza was fifth in 18:50.19 and sophomore Jordan Diaz was eighth in 19:03.44. The team will next compete at the District 2-5A Championship Oct. 10 at Horizon Golf Course.

Dropped out: Socorro.

1. Franklin: The Cougars finished third at in the 32-team, 244-runner Gold Division of the McNeil Invitational at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. Junior Emily Orr was 15th in 18:36.90, senior Sophia Keiser was 65th in 19:38.70, freshman Sophia Barraza was 69th in 19:44.30 and junior Abigail Pinon was 71st in 19:44.90. The team’s varsity is not running at the All-City Invitational Thursday at Horizon Golf Course.

2. Eastwood: The Troopers had seven runners in the top 9 to easily win the Clint/Riverside Invitational at Clint High School. Freshman Natalia Gomez won her first career invitational in 20:46.46. Senior Paulina Estrada was third in 21:10.06 followed by freshman Carlee Caraveo (fourth, 21:26.56), junior Sofia Perez (sixth,      22:27.80), sophomore Venus Jimenez (seventh, 22:48.62), sophomore Karime Gonzalez (eighth, 22:50.82) and sophomore Danika Sifuentes (ninth, 23:00.61). Eastwood will race the Desert Twilight Friday at Toka Sticks Golf Course in Mesa, Ariz.

3. Americas: The Trailblazers were eighth in the 30-teams, 211-runner Silver Division of the McNeil Invitational at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. Senior Lexee Salas led the Trailblazers, finishing 19th in 20:34.80. Other top runners were sophomore Carli Day (42nd in 21:21.60) and senior Laila Morales (55th in 21:37.10). The team will race the All-City Invitational Thursday at Horizon Golf Course.

Six runners finished in the top 8 led by freshman Crystal Delgado (third, 22:36.32), senior Alina Caballero (fourth, 23:42.06) and junior Nadine Villasana (fifth, 24:14.63). Other top 8 runners were sophomore Addy Carbone (sixth, 24:44.98), sophomore Emily Zarate (seventh, 24:59.03) and senior Victoria Perez (eight, 25:08.30). They scheduled to race the Desert Twilight Friday at Toka Sticks Golf Course in Mesa, Ariz.

7. Coronado: Freshman Ayana Le Thanh won her first invitational at the Coronado Invitational at Don Haskins Recreation Center. Thanh finished the rugged course in 22:26.17 to help the T-Birds to a team championship. Other top 10 runners were junior Emma Sassenfeld (ninth, 25:14.43) and junior Taylor Carrillo, (tenth, 25:16.13). The T-Birds are scheduled to race the Desert Twilight Friday at Toka Sticks Golf Course in Mesa, Ariz.

8. El Paso High: The Tigers were fifth in Class 5A Division of the McNeil Invitational at Old Settlers Park. Junior Clarissa Castillo (25th, 22:26.60),          sophomore Emma Guevara (30th, 22:39.50), sophomore Sofia Speer (32nd, 22:51.40  ) and junior Calista Sakellakos (35th, 22:57.70) were the top runners. El Paso is racing the All-City Invitational Thursday at Horizon Golf Course.

9. Eastlake: The Falcons did not race last weekend. The team will race the All-City Invitational Thursday at Horizon Golf Course.

10. Chapin: The Huskies did not race last weekend. They are not running a full varsity team at Thursday’s All-City Invitational at Horizon Golf Course.

Celebration of life ceremony for Danny McKillip on Sunday

A celebration of life ceremony for long-time El Paso High School track and cross country coach Danny McKillip will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Madeline Park, 900 E. Baltimore.

Organizers are asking people to bring a potluck dish, memories and stories to share. Danny McKillip tribute t-shirts will be on sale for $20 to $25.

The team is scheduled to race at the Clint/Riverside Invitational Saturday at Clint High School.  

2. Franklin: The Cougars did not race last week. They are scheduled to race the state course (Old Settlers Park) at the McNeil Invitational in Round Rock.

3. Burges: The Mustangs dominated the El Paso High Invitational Saturday at Mary Frances Keisling Park placing five runners in the top nine for 26 points. Senior Jesus Gastelum-Bustamante won his first invitational of the season, racing to a 16:11.51. Senior Malin Arnoldussen was fourth in 16:34.65, senior Jacob Yeager was fifth in 16:37.98, senior Carlos Chavez was seventh in 17:02.48 and senior Iskander Vargas was ninth in 17:07.38. The team is scheduled to race at the McNeil Invitational in Round Rock on Saturday.

4. Pebble Hills: The Spartans did not run their top runners at the Loretto/Cathedral Open at Veterans Park. Sophomore Nathan Martinez turned in a top 10 performance, finishing 10th in 17:22.31.

5. Coronado: The T-Birds did not run its full varsity team at the El Paso High Invitational Saturday at Mary Frances Keisling Park. Senior Max Sandhu was second in 16:15.65 and junior Rodrigo Pinales was third in 16:19.29. Coronado will race at its own invitational: Friday at Don Haskins Recreation Center.

9. Socorro: The Bulldogs move up a spot after its 99-point, fourth-place finish at the El Paso High Invitational. It’s top two runners were sophomore Jorge Mendez (12th, 17:24.99) and freshman Jose Chavez (14th, 18:04.77). The team will race at the Coronado Invitational at the Don Haskins Recreation Center.

10. Hanks: The Knights return to the top 10 on the strength of its fourth-place finish at the Loretto/Cathedral Open. It’s top two runners were junior Zerach Hernandez (12th, 17:23.63) and freshman Mateo Diaz (18th, 17:32.10). Hanks will race the Clint/Riverside Invitational Saturday at Clint High School.

High School Girl’s Cross Country Poll: Week 6

Every Wednesday, El Paso Running will utilize a point system to highlight El Paso’s top girls cross country runners.

The system is as follows: In a race of less than 150 runners, first place gets 10 points, second gets 9 points all the way down to 10th place which gets 1 point. For meets with between 150 to 300 runners, double points will be rewarded meaning 20 points for first, 19 for second all the way down to 1 point for 20th. For every additional 150 runners, another 10 runners will be included in the points.

1. Franklin: The Cougars did not race last week. They are scheduled to race the state course (Old Settlers Park) at the McNeil Invitational in Round Rock.

2. Eastwood: The Troopers had four runners in the top 9 to easily win the Loretto/Cathedral Invitational at Veteran’s Park with 30 points. Senior Adelynn Rodriguez led the team winning her fourth individual title of the season in 19:13.72. Freshman Natalia Gomez was third in 19:39.15, freshman Carlee Caraveo was sixth in 20:34.89 and senior Paulina Estrada was ninth in 20:53.59. The team is scheduled to race at the Clint/Riverside Invitational Saturday at Clint High School.   

3. Americas: The Trailblazers move up three spots after its second-place finish at the Loretto/Cathedral Invitational at Veteran’s Park, scoring 74 points. Senior Lexee Salas was the low stick for Americas, finishing fifth in 20:22.84. Other top 20 runners were senior Laila Morales (12th 20:58.67), junior Gisele Abascal (14th, 21:08.95) and sophomore Carli Day (17th, 21:31.13). Americas not scheduled to race this week.

4. Hanks: The Knights finished third at the Loretto/Cathedral Invitational at Veteran’s Park with 107 points. Two runners – senior Elizabeth Aguirre (seventh, 20:40.95) and junior    Ashlyn McMillan (eighth, 20:44.10) – were in the top 10. Hanks will race the Clint/Riverside Invitational Saturday at Clint High School.   

5. Pebble Hills: The Spartans drop one spot after its fourth-place finish at the Loretto/Cathedral Invitational at Veteran’s Park. Junior Aubrey Arsenault was the lone top 10 finisher placing 10th in 20:54.31.

6. Coronado: The T-Birds move up three spots after winning the El Paso High Invitational at Mary Frances Keisling Park with 55 points. Freshman Ayana Le Thanh was fourth in 20:29.89 and sophomore Annika Mier was sixth in 20:49.69. Coronado will race at its own invitational: Friday at Don Haskins Recreation Center.

7. El Paso High: The Tigers drop a spot after placing second by three points at its own invitational Saturday at Mary Frances Keisling Park. The team had three runners in the top 10 – junior Calista Sakellakos (eighth, 20:59.78), junior Clarissa Castillo (ninth, 21:06.40) and sophomore Sofia Speer (tenth, 21:09.81). They are scheduled to race at the McNeil Invitational Saturday at Old Settlers Park.

8. Eastlake: The Falcons are back in the top 10 after placing fifth at the Loretto/Cathedral Invitational with 115 points. Freshman Vitalia Hernandez finished second in 19:14.20       and junior Marielle Rubio was 13th in 21:04.06. The team will race the Coronado Invitational at Don Haskins Recreation Center on Friday.

9. Chapin: The Huskies had the biggest drop, falling six spots after its sixth-place finish at the Loretto/Cathedral Invitational with 127 points. It’s lone top 10 runner was senior Rebecca Duran who was fourth in 20:16.34. Senior Ava Dennis was the only other top 20 runner, finishing 16th in 21:28.51. They are schedule to race at the Clint/Riverside Invitational Saturday at Clint High School.   

10. Socorro: The Bulldogs were third at the El Paso High Invitational at Mary Frances Keisling Park with 69 points. Freshman Crystal Delgado was second in 20:04.58 and senior Alina Caballero was 11th in 21:11.29.

Sophmore Elias Alcocer was third in 17:13.35, junior Jonah Herd Jr. was fourth (17:13.78) senior Nathan Arreola was seventh (17:37.25) and junior Evan Chacon was eighth in 17:59.35. Eastwood will race Saturday’s Loretto/Cathedral Open at Veterans Park.

2. Franklin: The Cougars finished the Southlake Carroll Invitational in 11th place. It’s top two runners were juniors Sebastian Mendez (54th, 16:06.10 49) and Fransisco Medina (58th, 16:09.50 52). The team will not race this weekend.

3. Burges: The Mustangs easily won the Mt. View/Fabens Invitational scoring 21 points. Malin Arnoldussen was the low-stick man finishing second in 16:36.63 followed by EIsais Gaytan (fourth, 16:46.28), Jacob Yeager (fifth, 16:46.55) and Jesus Gastelum-Bustamante (sixth, 16:54.07). Burges will race the El Paso High Invitational Saturday at Mary Frances Keisling Park.

4. Pebble Hills: The Spartans finished fourth at the 28-team, 304-runner Joe Vigil Invitational in Alamosa, Colo. Junior Ameen Ibrahim was 19th in 16:58.75 followed by sophomore Erick Gutierrez (22nd, 17:04.02), freshman Adrian Cisneros Rodriguez (29th, 17:15.58 28) and sophomore Gavin Cottle (33rd, 17:19.10 31). The Spartans are scheduled to race at the Loretto/Cathedral Open at Veterans Park on Saturday.

5. Coronado: The T-Birds did not run a full team at the Hanks Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park but managed to have two runners in the top 8 – junior Humberto Serna won gold in 16:23.47 and senior Max Sandhu was eighth in 17:09.12. The team will race the El Paso High Invitational Saturday at Mary Frances Keisling Park.

6. San Elizario: The Eagles had four runners in the top 9 at their own invitational and finished second with 34 points. Junior Antonio Arreola was second in 16:47.08 followed by Alexander Cano (fifth, 17:31.69), freshman Angel Richarte (sixth, 17:32.65) and sophomore Jorel Miramontes (ninth, 18:01.03). The team will race at the Loretto/Cathedral Open.

7. El Paso High: The Tigers did not race last weekend. They will race at their own invitational Saturday at Mary Frances Keisling Park.

High School Girl’s Cross Country Poll: Week 5

Every Wednesday, El Paso Running will utilize a point system to highlight El Paso’s top girls cross country runners.

The system is as follows: In a race of less than 150 runners, first place gets 10 points, second gets 9 points all the way down to 10th place which gets 1 point. For meets with between 150 to 300 runners, double points will be rewarded meaning 20 points for first, 19 for second all the way down to 1 point for 20th. For every additional 150 runners, another 10 runners will be included in the points.

For those who like raw times, we also list the Top 25 girls race times and the meets and dates that they occurred.

Chapin sophomore Jocelynne Diaz Torres, Hanks junior Ashlyn McMillan and Mt. View’s Dayanara Gonzalez each finished in the top 6 at the Hanks Invitational.

Top 10

1. Franklin: Junior Emily Orr won the individual title in the Elite Division of the Southlake Carroll Invitational beating 174 runners in 17:46.70. She helped the Cougars to a fifth-place finish with 184 points. All seven runners set season best and placed in the top 25 times. Freshman Sophia Barraza was 23rd in 18:48.90, senior Sophia Keiser was 44th in 19:11.50, junior Abigail Pinon was 52nd in 19:17.00, sophomore Emyreth Chaparro Chavez was 90th in 19:53.80, senior Tessa Gibbons was 94th in 19:55.40, senior Mireyda Samper was 102nd in 19:58.90 and senior Isabella Campa was 112th in 20:09.50. The team will not race this weekend.

2. Eastwood: The Troopers did not run its top runners at the Tornillo Invitational but still won the event with 27 points. The team placed five in the top 10 including sophomore Venus Jimenez (third, 21:39.64), junior Sofia Perez (fourth, 21:42.94), sophomore Karime Gonzalez (fifth, 22:00.34), sophomore Danika Sifuentes (sixth, 22:21.70) and freshman Andrea Caro (tenth, 23:26.83). Eastwood will race Saturday’s Loretto/Cathedral Open at Veterans Park.

3. Chapin: The Huskies did not run a full team at the Hanks Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park but placed two runners in the top 10. Senior Ava Dennis was second in 21:00.2 and sophomore Jocelynne Diaz Torres was tenth in 22:03.1. The team is scheduled to race the Loretto/Cathedral Open at Veterans Park on Saturday.

4. Pebble Hills: The Spartans were 12th in the 23-team, 257-runner at the Joe Vigil Invitational in Alamosa, Colo. Its top runner was sophomore Lila Najera who was 43rd in 21:04.17. Other top 100 runners were Amina Delgadillo (66th, 21:59.01) and Haelee Enriquez (74th, 22:13.93). They are schedule to race Saturday’s Loretto/Cathedral Open at Veterans Park.

5. Americas: The Trailblazers were fourth at the Class 5A Division of the Lubbock Invitational with 126 points. Carli Day was the top runner, placing 14th in 21:34.3 followed by Gisele Abascal (16th, 21:37.3). Americas is scheduled to race the Loretto/Cathedral Open at Veterans Park on Saturday.

6. El Paso High: The Tigers did not run a full team at the Hanks Invitational. Its top runner was Calista Sakellakos who was 12th in 22:19.4. The team will race at its own invitational Saturday at Mary Frances Keisling Park.

7. Hanks: The Knights won their own invitational at Blackie Chesher Park, placing two runners in the top 7 to finish with 54points. Junior Ashlyn McMillan won the event in 20:41.1 and senior Elizabeth Aguirre was seventh in 21:32.2. Hanks will race at the Loretto/Cathedral Open at Veterans Park on Saturday.

8. Socorro: The Bulldogs did not race a full team at the Hanks Invitational. Its top runner was Nadine Villasana who was 15th in 22:32.5. The Bulldogs are expected to be at full strength at Saturday’s El Paso High Invitational at Mary Frances Keisling Park.

9. Coronado: The T-Birds return to the Top 10 after finishing second at the Hanks Invitational at Blackie Chesher. Ayana Le Tanh was the top runner, placing ninth in 21:53.7. Coronado will race Saturday’s El Paso High Invitational at Mary Frances Keisling Park.

10. Montwood: The Rams make its debut in the Top 10, finishing third eight points behind Coronado at the Hanks Invitational. Mia Hairston was third in 21:08.3 and Aubrey Cameron was fourth in 21:15.2. The team is scheduled to race the Loretto/Cathedral Open at Veterans Park on Saturday.

Burges will race the Hanks Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park on Friday morning.

4. Pebble Hills: Pebble Hills won the Montwood Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park with 38 points, placing four runners in the top 10 – senior Jorge Soto (sixth, 17:28.22), senior Ameen Ibrahim (seventh, 17:42.40), junior Erick Gutierrez (eighth, 17:44.19) and junior Gavin Cottle (tenth, 17:54.64). The Spartans are scheduled to race at the Lubbock Invitational on Saturday morning.

5. Coronado: The T-Birds were second at the Montwood Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park with 47 points. Coronado runners finished 1-2-3 with junior Humberto Serna picking up his first win of the season in 16:40.55. Senior Max Sandhu was second in 17:05.86 and junior Rodrigo Pinales was third in 17:08.74. The team will compete at the Hanks Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park Friday.

6. San Elizario: The Eagles move up two spots after its second-place finish at the Mt. View/Fabens Invitational. San Elizario had two runners in the top 6 – junior Antonio Arreola was third in 19:46.95 and freshman Angel Bocanegra was sixth in 20:35.04. The team will race at the Tornillo Invitational on Saturday.

7. El Paso High: The Tigers dropped a spot after its third-place finish at the Mt. View/Fabens Invitational. Senior Miles Westbrook picked up his second individual title of the season, winning in 18:43.33. Senior Ulysses O’Rourke was fifth in 20:30.24. They will race the Hanks Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park on Friday morning.

8. Eastlake: The Falcons did not race last weekend. They will race the Hanks Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park on Friday morning.

9. Socorro: The Bulldogs return to the Top 10 after placing third with 97 points at that Montwood Invitational. Its lone top 10 runner was junior Zerach Hernandez who was ninth in 17:50.53. They will race the Hanks Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park on Friday morning.

10. Austin: The Panthers remain steady at No. 10 after its fourth-place finish at the Montwood Invitational with 99 points. Its top runner was senior Pedro Jimenez who was fourth in 17:13.48. Austin will compete at the Hanks Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park on Friday.

The team had two runners in the top 10 – sophomore Lila Najera (ninth, 21:41.46) and senior Ivy Torres (tenth, 21:50.55). They are scheduled to race at the Lubbock Invitational on Saturday morning.
