Region 1 Cross Country Championships: Only the strong survive

What: Region 1 Cross Country Championship.

When: Monday – (All times MST) 4A girls, 9:30 a.m.; 4A boys, 10 a.m.; 6A girls, 11 a.m.; 6A boys, 11:30 a.m. Tuesday – 3A boys, 10 a.m.; 5A girls, 11 a.m.; 5A boys, 11:30 a.m.

Where: Mae Simmons Park, MLK Blvd. and 24th Street in Lubbock.

At stake: Top four teams and top 10 individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the UIL Cross Country State Championship, Saturday Nov. 3 and 4 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.

Who’s running?

The following girl’s teams and runners have advanced:

Class 6A: Franklin, Eastwood, Socorro. Also, Vitalia Hernandez, Eastlake.

Class 5A: Chapin, El Paso, Burges, Americas, Hanks and El Dorado. Also, Denise Echeverria, Jefferson; Lauren Orantia, Canutillo, Nevaeh Escobedo, Canutillo and Nima Ruiz, Horizon.

Class 4A: Harmony, Austin, Irvin, San Elizario, Fabens and Riverside. Also, Samantha Tarango, Bowie; Dayanara Gonzalez, Mt. View; Alexandria Renteria, Young Womens Leadership and Ashley Saenz, Ysleta.

The following boy’s teams and runners have advanced:

Class 6A: Eastwood, Franklin and Coronado.

Class 5A: Burges, El Paso, Chapin, Hanks, Americas, Del Valle. Also, Yael Lira, Bel Air.

Class 4A: Harmony, Austin, Irvin, San Elizario, Clint, Fabens.

Thirty teams – 15 boys and 15 girls – along with nine girls competing as individuals, are headed to Lubbock for the Region 1 Class 6A, 5A and 4A regional championships Monday and Tuesday at Mae Simmons Park.

The top four teams and top 10 individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the UIL Cross Country State Championship, Nov. 1 and 2 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.

The district cross country meets for Class 4A, 5A and District 1-6A took place Oct. 10 at the Horizon Golf Course. The top three teams and runners from each district who finished in the top 10 and not on a qualifying team advance to the Region 1 Championship.

Class 6A

Franklin, ranked No. 9 in Texas, won its seventh straight championship placing five runners in the top nine, good for 27 points.

Junior Emily Orr finished second in 19:04.39. Freshman Sophia Barraza was fourth (20:35.30), senior Sophia Keiser was fifth (20:38.55) junior Abigail Pinon was seventh (20:53.09) and senior Tessa Gibbons was ninth (21:28.85).

The team is seeking its fifth trip to state in six years.

Eastwood senior Adelynn Rodriguez won her third straight individual District 1-6A title in 18:57.1, leading the Troopers to another regional championship. The team finished second in district with 50 points. Freshman Natalia Gomez was sixth in 20:45.38 and freshman Carlee Caraveo was tenth (21:33.23).

Also advancing to regionals are the Socorro Bulldogs who finished third at district. Freshman Crystal Delgado was the lone top 10 runner, finishing eighth in 21:27.5.

Eastlake freshman Vitalia Hernandez finished third at district in 20:04.6 and advanced to regionals.

Canutillo senior Lauren Orantia was eighth at the District 1-5A Championship and advanced to regionals.

Class 5A

The Chapin Huskies defended its District 1-5A District title with 32 points as did senior Rebecca Duran who won the individual title in 21:10.58. Sophomore Jocelynne Diaz Torres was second in 21:23.91 and sophomore Abigail Sanchez was ninth in 23:41.87.

Chapin is seeking its second straight state appearance.

Americas placed four runners in the top six – including the top three spots – to win District 2-5A crown with 22 points. Sophomore Carli Day won her first race of the season, leading the pack in 21:06.63. Senior Lexee Salas was second in 21:18.45, junior Gisele Abascal was third in 21:37.79 and senior Laila Morales was sixth in 22:26.57.

The Knights finished second in District 2-5A with 44 points. Senior Elizabeth Aguirre placed fourth in 21:41.26, junior Ashlyn McMillan was fifth in 22:15.22 and sophomore Alyssa Fino was seventh in 22:29.90.

El Paso High is also advancing, finishing second in District 1-5A. The Tigers had three runners in the top six including junior Calista Sakellakos who was third in 22:46.37, sophomore Sofia Speer was fourth (22:50.41) and junior Clarissa Castillo was sixth (22:59.21).

Also advancing to regionals are Burges, who is led by senior Keilah Valenzuela-Garcia who finished seventh at district in 23:37 and El Dorado who had two runners in the top 10 – junior Mailelani Ahia (ninth, 22:57.2) and senior Damaris Estrada (tenth, 22:59.2) – at the District 2-5A Championship.

Jefferson sophomore Denise Echeverria finished fifth in 22:53.0, Canutillo senior Lauren Orantia was eighth in 23:38.4 and Canutillo junior Nevaeh Escobedo was tenth in 23:49.6 at the District 1-5A Championship and Horizon junior Nima Ruiz was eighth (22:53.1) in District 2-5A and advanced to regionals.

Fabens sophomore Alexia Martinez won her second District 2-4A individual championship .

Class 4A

The Eagles won its third straight District 2-4A Championship, placing three runners in the top 8, for 53 points and advanced to regionals.

Senior Ivonne De La Riva was sixth in 14:43.23 (2-mile race), sophomore Danika Rivera was seventh in 14:49.36 and sophomore Lyanna Morales was eighth in 14:54.08.

Harmony Science Academy defended its District 1-4A Championship, placing six runners in the top 10 for 28 points.

Leading the way as sophomore Mireya Galindo who completed the 2-mile course in 15:51.2, good for third place. Junior Camila Gomez was fourth in 15:51.6, junior Arielle Beltran Del Rio was sixth in 16:23.2, junior Camila Garcia-Rocha was seventh (16:33.1), sophomore Regina Perez was eighth (16:36.4) and freshman Sophie Padilla was ninth in 16:38.7.

Fabens sophomore Alexia Martinez won her second District 2-4A individual championship in 13:17.3. 3. Her sophomore teammates – Angel Quinonez (fifth, 14:19.3) and Evelyn Hernandez (tenth, 14:39.7) also had top 10 finishes to lead the Wildcats to a second-place district finish.

Martinez and Quinonez reached the state championship last year.

Riverside sophomore Dana Gonzalez was fourth in 14:33.2 to help the Rangers to regionals.

Austin and Irvin also advanced.

Four runners – junior Dayanara Gonzalez, Mountain View; Bowie sophomore Samantha Tarango, Young Womens Leadership junior Alexandria Renteria, and Ysleta freshman Ashley Saenz – advanced as individuals.

Boys

Senior Danny Torres won his first District 1-6A title.

Class 6A

Eastwood, ranked No. 5 in the state, defended the District 1-6A championship placing six runners in the top 9, including taking the top four spots for 16 points, almost perfect score.

Senior Danny Torres won his first district title in 16:17.32 followed by sophomore Noah Loweree (16:35.20), senior Marcos Madrid (16:37.07) and senior Luke Cruz (16:38.77). Junior Job DeSantos was sixth in 16:58.78 and sophomore Elias Alcocer was ninth in 17:19.42. This is Eastwood’s 13th district championship in 14 years.

Franklin, which was second with 48 points, had three runners in the top 10 – junior Fransisco Medina was fifth in 16:49.45, junior Jacob Martinez was seventh in 17:08.76 and junior Sebastian Mendez was tenth in 17:23.86.

Eastwood and Franklin earned state berths last year.

Coronado is also advancing to regionals, finishing third with 82 points.

Junior Humberto Serna who was eighth in 17:13.90 and junior Rodrigo Pinales was 11th in 17:31.1.

Class 5A

New team champions were crowned at the District 1-5A and 2-5A races.

Burges had six runners in the top 10 to win the District 1-5A Championship with 31 points.

Senior Malin Arnoldussen who was second in 16:53.98, senior Carlos Chavez was fifth (17:37.56), senior Christian Baca was seventh in 17:59.91 followed by senior Jacob Yeager (eighth, 18:10.04), senior Jesus Gastelum-Bustamante (ninth, 18:11.34) and senior Isais Gaytan (tenth, 18:23.50).

Also advancing out of District 1-5A are El Paso and Chapin.

El Paso High Senior Miles Westbrook won his third individual title, racing to a 16:00.67 and senior Ulysses O’Rourke was third in 17:26.51. The Tigers were second with 46 points. El Paso earned a state berth last year.

Chapin had two senior runners – Terrance Burnell (fourth, 17:37.5) and Braulio Torres (sixth, 17:55.2) – in the top 10. The team score was 66.

The Hanks Knights won the District 2-5A Championship. Hanks runners finished in sixth through tenth place. Freshman Mateo Diaz was sixth in 18:40.46, junior Jacob Del Real was seventh in 18:50.55, junior Darian Hernandez was eighth in 18:51.71, junior Zerach Hernandez was ninth (18:56.70) and senior Noah Arias was tenth in 18:56.93

Americas senior Diego Romero won the individual district championship in 16:29.62 and sophomore Austin Garza was third in 18:21.32. The Trialblazers finished second with 54 points.

Del Valle finished one point behind Americas but still advanced to regionals.

Its top runners were senior Damian Espinoza (second, 18:11.1), sophomore Jordan Diaz (fourth, 18:25.5) and senior Evan Tovar (13^th, 19:26.4).

Bel Air sophomore Yael Lira also advanced to regionals after finishing fifth in 18:33.6

Junior Antonio Arreola won his first District 2-4A title.

Class 4A

San Elizario runners finished 1-6 and won its 12th consecutive District 2-4A Championship with a perfect score of 15.

Junior Antonio Arreola won his first district title in 17:08.13, followed by junior Alexander Cano (second, 18:09.51), sophomore Jorel Miramontes (third, 18:34.30), freshman Angel Bocanegra (fourth, 18:41.01), freshman Daniel Maese (fifth, 18:47.95), junior Damian Hernandez (sixth, 19:03.30) and junior Jozaih Paiz (eighth, 19:09.51).

San Elizario, which is ranked No. 10 in the state, will seek its eleventh straight state appearance. In the past ten years, San Elizario has won six state championships and finished third three times.

Fabens, which advanced to regionals, had two runners in the top 10 – junior Jesse Ortiz (seventh, 19:06.0) and senior Teo Quinonez (ninth, 19:15.7).

Clint freshman Armando Jalil was tenth in 19:44.9, helping the team advance to regionals.

In District 1-4A, Austin defended its title, placing all seven runners in the top 10.

Senior Pedro Jimenez also defended his individual title, winning in 17:31.13. Junior Eirik Arredondo was second in 17:58.40, junior Luis Pereda was third in 17:59.03, senior Cesar Cardoza was sixth in 19:05.81, senior Edgar Rodriguez was seventh (19:40.13), junior Omar Mesta was eighth (19:45.54) and sophomore Cesar Chavez was tenth in 20:36.77.

Jimenez was a state qualifier last year.

Harmony Science Academy finished second with three runners, all sophomores, in the top 10.

David Retana was fourth in 18:16.8, Aiden Ochoa was fifth in 18:46.6 and Victor Hernandez was ninth in 19:47.5.

Irvin was third in district and advanced to regionals.

High School Boy’s Top Cross Country Poll: Week 9

Every Thursday, El Paso Running will utilize a point system to highlight El Paso’s top boy’s cross country runners.

The system is as follows: In a race of less than 150 runners, first place gets 10 points, second gets 9 points all the way down to 10th place which gets 1 point. For meets with between 150 to 300 runners, double points will be rewarded meaning 20 points for first, 19 for second all the way down to 1 point for 20th. For every additional 150 runners, another 10 runners will be included in the points.

Franklin will race for a trip to state at the Region 1-6A Championship at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 21 at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.

3. Coronado: The T-Birds move up one after qualifying to regionals with a third-place finish at the District 1-6A Championship with 82 points. Its top runner was junior Humberto Serna who was eighth in 17:13.90. Junior Rodrigo Pinales was 11^th in 17:31.1. The team will race at Region 1-6A Championship at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 21 in Lubbock.

4. Burges: The Mustangs won the District 1-5A Championship with 31 points and move up a spot. Burges had six runners in the top 10 including senior Malin Arnoldussen who was second in 16:53.98, senior Carlos Chavez (fifth, 17:37.56), senior Christian Baca (seventh, 17:59.91), senior Jacob Yeager (eighth, 18:10.04), senior Jesus Gastelum-Bustamante (ninth, 18:11.34) and senior Isais Gaytan (tenth, 18:23.50). The Mustangs will race the Region 1-5A Championship at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 22 in Lubbock.

6. Pebble Hills: The Spartans drop four spots after placing fourth at the District 1-6A Championship with 97 points. It’s top runner was senior Ameen Ibrahim was 13^th in 17:48.0. Pebble Hills season is over.

7. El Paso High: The Tigers were second at the District 1-5A Championship with 46 points. Senior Miles Westbrook won his third individual title, racing to a 16:00.67 and senior Ulysses O’Rourke was third in 17:26.51. El Paso will race the Region 1-5A Championship at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 22 in Lubbock.

The team finished second with 50 points. Freshman Natalia Gomez was sixth in 20:45.38 and freshman Carlee Caraveo was tenth (21:33.23). The team will race in the Region 1, Class 6A division Monday at 11 a.m. at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.

3. Americas: The Trailblazers won the District 2-5A Championship with 22 points, placing four runners in the top six, including the top three spots. Sophomore Carli Day won her first race of the season, leading the pack in 21:06.63. Senior Lexee Salas was second in 21:18.45, junior Gisele Abascal was third in 21:37.79 and senior Laila Morales was sixth in 22:26.57. The Trailblazers will race at the Region 1, Class 5A Cross Country Championships at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.

4. Hanks: The Knights finished second in District 2-5A with 44 points. Senior Elizabeth Aguirre was the top runner, placing fourth in 21:41.26. Junior Ashlyn McMillan was fifth in 22:15.22 and sophomore Alyssa Fino was seventh in 22:29.90. The tam will race at the Region 1, Class 5A Cross Country Championships at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock

5. Socorro: The Bulldogs move up a spot after its third-place finish at the District 1-6A Championship, earning the team a trip to regionals. Socorro had two top 15 runners – freshman Crystal Delgado (eighth, 21:27.5) and junior Nadine Villasana (15^th, 22:16.4). Socorro will race in the Region 1, Class 6A division Monday at 11 a.m. at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.

6. Chapin: The Huskies move up four spots after defending its District 1-5A District title with 32 points. Chapin runners took the gold and silver medals. Senior Rebecca Duran defended her individual title, winning in 21:10.58 and sophomore Jocelynne Diaz Torres was second (21:23.91). Sophomore Abigail Sanchez was ninth in 23:41.87. The team will compete in the Region 1-5A Championship at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Lubbock.

7. Pebble Hills: The Spartans drop two spots after finishing with 121 points and distant fourth at the District 1-6A Championship. Its top runner was freshman Amina Delgadillo was 20^th in 23:02.7. The team’s season is over.

7. Eastlake: The Falcons tied Pebble Hills for fourth at the District 1-6A Championship. Its top runner was freshman Vitalia Hernandez who finished third in 20:04.6. Hernandez will advance to the Region 1-6A Championship at 11 a.m. Monday.

9. El Paso High: The Tigers placed three runners in the top six and finished second at the District 1-5A Girls Championship with 40 points. Junior Calista Sakellakos was third in 22:46.37, sophomore Sofia Speer was fourth (22:50.41) and junior Clarissa Castillo was sixth (22:59.21). The team will race for a spot at state at the Region 1-5A Championship at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Lubbock.

10. San Elizario: The Eagles won its third straight District 2-4A Championship, placing three runners in the top 8, for 53 points. Senior Ivonne De La Riva was sixth in 14:43.23 (2-mile race), sophomore Danika Rivera was seventh in 14:49.36 and sophomore Lyanna Morales was eighth in 14:54.08. San Elizario will race at the Region 1-4A Championships at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 21 at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.

Senior Luke Cruz was 48^th in 15:51.7 and junior Job DeSantos was 57^th in 15:57.1. The team looks to defend the District 1-6A Championship Oct. 10 at Horizon Golf Course.

2. Pebble Hills: The Spartans did not race their varsity last week. The team is preparing for the District 1-6A Championship Oct. 10 at Horizon Golf Course.

3. Franklin: The Cougars won the All-City Invitational at Horizon Golf Course with 32 points. The team had four runners in the top 10 including junior Sebastian Mendez (third, 16:54.4), junior Fransisco Medina (fifth, 16:58.5), junior Bryant Standage (sixth, 17:05.6), junior Sebastian Camacho (eighth, 17:30.4) and sophomore Jose Granados (tenth, 17:57.0). The team will now prepare for the District 1-6A Championship Oct. 10 at Horizon Golf Course.

4. Coronado: The T-Birds were 23^rd in the 299 runner, 37 team Desert Twilight Sweepstakes Division at Toka Sticks Golf Course in Mesa, Ariz. Its top runners were junior Humberto Serna (41^st, 15:44.2) and junior Rodrigo Pinales (81^st, 16:15.7). The team is working toward a top three finish at the District 1-6A Championship Oct. 10 at Horizon Golf Course.

5. Burges: The Mustangs had three runners in the top 50, including one in the top 10, to finish fourth in the 287 runner, 37 team Desert Twilight Championship Division at Toka Sticks Golf Course in Mesa, Ariz. Senior Malin Arnoldussen was seventh in 15:55.9, followed by senior Jacob Yeager (31^st, 16:26.2) and senior Jesus Gastelum-Bustamante (50^th, 16:47.2). Burges is looking to qualify to regionals for the second year in a row. It all starts Oct. 10 at the District 1-5A Championship at Horizon Golf Course.

6. San Elizario: The Eagles finished third at the 280-runner, 39-team Desert Twilight Big School Varsity Division. Junior Antonio Arreola was second in 16:18.7 followed by junior Alexander Cano (19^th, 17:05.9), senior Jerry Estrada (30^th, 17:24.6) and sophomore Jorel Miramontes (40^th, 17:34.1). San Elizario is seeking its 12^th straight District 2-4A Championship Oct. 10 at Horizon Golf Course.

7. El Paso High: The Tigers were second at the All-City Invitational at Horizon Golf Course with 88 points. Senior Miles Westbrook won his third individual title, racing to a 16:06.4. Senior Ulysses O’Rourke was fourth in 16:56.3. El Paso is looking to defend the District 1-5A title Oct. 10 at Horizon Golf Course.

8. Austin: The Panthers were fourth at the 243-runner, 33-team Desert Twilight Small School Varsity Division. Junior Eirik Arredondo was tenth in 16:54.8 and senior Pedro Jimenez was 13^th in 16:59.8. Austin is out to defend its District 1-4A title Oct. 10 at Horizon Golf Course.
