High School Boy’s Cross Country Poll: Week 7

Every Thursday, El Paso Running will utilize a point system to highlight El Paso’s top boy’s cross country runners.

The system is as follows: In a race of less than 150 runners, first place gets 10 points, second gets 9 points all the way down to 10th place which gets 1 point. For meets with between 150 to 300 runners, double points will be rewarded meaning 20 points for first, 19 for second all the way down to 1 point for 20th. For every additional 150 runners, another 10 runners will be included in the points.

For those who like raw times, we also list the Top 25 boys race times and the meets and dates that they occurred.

Americas, Franklin, Bel Air, Canutillo, Coronado, Burges, Clint, Eastlake, El Paso, El Dorado, Fabens, Hanks, Harmony, Montwood, Mountain View, Parkland, Pebble Hills, Riverside, San Elizario, Socorro, Tornillo, Valle Verde, Ysleta, YWLA.

Desert Twilight XC Festival: 8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 29 atToka Sticks Golf Course in Mesa, Ariz. Eastwood, Cathedral, Del Valle.

The city’s biggest invitational is Friday morning at Horizon Golf Course.

Top 10

1. Franklin: Franklin won the Southlake Carroll Invitational with 62 points. The team was led by senior Matthew Engle who was second in 15:01.20. The Cougars had three other runners in the top 20 – senior Juan Leal (11th, 15:33.71), senior Adan Castillo (14th, 15:40.90) and senior Sebastian Gonzalez (19th, 15:46.40), all personal season-best times. Franklin is not running its varsity at the All City Meet at Horizon Golf Course on Friday.

2. Eastwood: The Troopers did not run its varsity at the Rudolfo “Rudy” Alvarez Invitational at Del Valle but still won the event with 35 points. Trooper runners took the 5-10 spots. Senior Julian Miramontes was fifth in 17:23.64 followed by senior Ryan Lozano (17:27.82), sophomore Job DeSantos (17:33.20), senior Sergio Lara (17:33.30), senior Diego Ruiz (17:48.10) and sophomore Isaac Marquez (17:48.82). The team will travel to Mesa, Ariz. on Friday night to race in the Desert Twilight XC Festival at Toka Sticks Golf Course.

3. San Elizario: The Eagles challenged themselves competing in the Gold Division of the McNeil Hoka Invitational at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. Racing against 228-runners and 27 teams, San Elizario finished tenth. Seniors Angel Maese and Julian Guerra finished 44th and 45th in identical times, 16:15.2. The team is scheduled to race at the All City Meet at Horizon Golf Course on Friday.

4. Coronado: The T-Birds scored a perfect score at its own invitational at Don Haskins Park. Senior Edgar Valles won his first race of the season, finishing in 17:46.77. Sophomore Humberto Serna was second in 18:00.69 followed by senior Preston Eastman (18:24.63), junior Max Sandhu (18:32.31) and sophomore Rodrigo Pinales (19:06.97). They will compete at the All City Meet at Horizon Golf Course on Friday.

5. El Paso High: The Tigers easily won the 214-runner, 28-team Class 5A Division of the McNeil Hoka Invitational at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. El Paso’s scoring runners all placed in the top 20 led by junior Miles Westbrook who won the event in 16:14.8. Senior Leo Valenzuela was second in 16:54.2, junior Ulysses O’Rourke was eighth in 17:32.8, senior Aydan Lugo was tenth in 17:39.5 and junior Lorenzo Shields was 18th in 18:07.5. The team will race at the All City Meet at Horizon Golf Course on Friday.

6. Pebble Hills: The Spartans finished ninth in the 270-runner, 38-team Silver Division of the McNeil Hoka Invitational at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. Senior Mark Barajas was ninth in 16:19.8 and sophomore Zyler Garnica      was 63rd in 17:09.3. Pebble Hills will run at the All City Meet at Horizon Golf Course on Friday.

7. Burges: The Mustangs finished second in the 5A Division at the Lubbock Invitational at Mae Simmons Park. Burges placed three runners in the top 20 – junior Malin Arnoldusen (15th, 18:07.40), junior Jacob Yeager (16th, 18:14.40) and junior Christian Baca (18th, 18:19.80). The team will race at the All City Meet at Horizon Golf Course on Friday.

8. Chapin: The Huskies did not run a full team at the Lubbock Invitational. They did place three runners in the top 12 in the 5A division – senior Jose Rosa (fifth, 17:16.00), senior Sean Sanchez (sixth, 17:22.80) and junior Braulio Torres (12th, 18:03.20). The team will race at the All City Meet at Horizon Golf Course on Friday.

9. Socorro: The Bulldogs move back into the top 10 after finishing second at the Coronado Invitational at Don Haskins Park. Senior Renee Galaviz was seventh in 19:49.01 and senior Ivan Martinez was tenth in 20:05.22. The team will race at the All City Meet at Horizon Golf Course on Friday.

10. Bel Air: The Highlanders return to the top 10 after its second-place finish at theRudolfo “Rudy” Alvarez Invitational at Del Valle. A pair of seniors – Leonardo Resendez (16:57.21) and Hernnan Duarte (17:10.67) – finished second and fourth. The team will race at the All City Meet at Horizon Golf Course on Friday.

Dropped out: Del Valle, Eastlake.

On the brink: Montwood.

The Highlanders return to the top 10 after its second-place finish at the Rudolfo “Rudy” Alvarez Invitational at Del Valle.

El Paso High junior Miles has four individual titles this season. He won the El Paso Invitational last week in 15:44.87.

Top 10

1. Franklin: Franklin has not raced in two weeks in preparation of the Southlake Carroll Invitational on Saturday.

2. Eastwood: The Troopers finished 11th in the Woodbridge Rated Division. The team competed against 39 schools and 281 runners.  Junior Aidan Torres finished the 3-mile course in fourth place with a personal best 14:33.6. Other runners who established top 25 city times were senior Sulliman Rodriguez (15:24.6), senior Leo Espino (15:27.2), junior Luke Cruz (15:38.3), sophomore Jonah Herd Jr. (15:55.6) and senior Eric Gonzalez (15:59.6). The team is scheduled to compete at the Rudolfo “Rudy” Alvarez Invitational Saturday at Del Valle.

3. San Elizario: The Eagles finished first at the Loretto/Cathedral Open at Veterans Park with 43 points and move up a spot. San Elizario had four in the top 10 including senior Julian Guerra (third, 16:02.040), senior Angel Maese (fifth, 16:22.07), senior Gustavo Salazar (eighth, 17:12.89) and sophomore Antonio Arreola (ninth, 17:12.90). The team is scheduled to compete at the Rudolfo “Rudy” Alvarez Invitational Saturday at Del Valle.

4. Coronado: The T-Birds move up one after narrowly winning the El Paso High Invitational at Mary Frances Keisling Park with 27 points. Coronado placed four runners in the top six led by senior Edgar Valles (second, 15:51.19). Junior Max Sandhu was fourth (16:05.98), sophomore Humberto Serna was fifth in 16:08.09 and sophomore Rodrigo Pinales was sixth (16:31.33). Coronado will race at its own invitational Friday at Don Haskins Park.

5. El Paso High: The Tigers move down two spots after its second-place finish at its own invitational, coming up one point short. Junior Miles Westbrook won his fourth individual title, finishing in 15:44.87. Senior Leo Valenzuela was third in 15:55.41, junior Ulysses O’Rourke was seventh in 16:32.94, senior Aydan Lugo was ninth in 16:48.55 and junior Lorenzo Shields was tenth in 17:13.42. The team is scheduled to race the McNeil Hoka Invitational at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock on Saturday.

6. Pebble Hills: The Spartans finished second at the Loretto/Cathedral Open at Veterans Park with 60 points. Senior Mark Barajas was second in 15:56.80. They are scheduled to race the McNeil Hoka Invitational at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock on Saturday.

7. Burges: The Mustangs did not race this weekend. The team will race at the Lubbock Invitational at Mae Simmons Park on Saturday.

8. Chapin: The Huskies finished fourth at the Loretto/Cathedral Open at Veterans Park with 105 points. Two runners – junior Braulio Torres (sixth, 17:04.83) and senior Sean Sanchez (tenth, 17:13.01) – had top 10 finishes. The team will race at the Lubbock Invitational at Mae Simmons Park on Saturday.

9. Eastlake: The Falcons did not run is varsity at the Loretto/Cathedral Open at Veterans Park last week. They are scheduled to run at the Coronado Invitational Friday at Don Haskins Park.

10. Del Valle: Del Valle did not run its full varsity team at the El Paso High Invitational. Its top runner was junior Damian Espinosa who was eighth in 16:36.91. They will run at their own invitational Saturday morning.

1. Franklin: Franklin is ranked No. 4 in the state’s Class 6A division this week. They will race at the Loretto/Cathedral Open at Veterans Park on Saturday..

2. Eastwood: The Troopers are ranked No 10 in the state in Class 6A. They placed six runners in the top 10 and four in the top 5 to win the San Elizario/Tornillo Invitational at Tornillo. Junior Aidan Torres remains unbeaten this season, winning in 16:14.68. Senior Sulliman Rodriguez was second (16:30.16) followed by junior Luke Cruz (third, 16:39.51), senior Leo Espino (fourth, 16:49.66), senior Eric Gonzalez (seventh, 17:08.93) and sophomore Jonah Herd (eighth, 17:09.64). The team will travel to California to compete at the 42nd Woodbridge Cross Country Classic in Irvine on Friday night.

3. El Paso High: The Tigers are ranked No. 10 in the state in Class 5A. The team won its second straight title, winning the Bel Air Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park with 45 points. Junior Miles Westbrook won his third individual title, finishing in 16:02.33. El Paso had two more runners in the top 10 – senior Leo Valenzuela (fourth, 16:17.06) and junior Ulysses O’Rourke (eighth, 16:51.62). The Tigers are scheduled to race at their own invitational at Mary Frances Keisling Park on Saturday.

4. San Elizario: The Eagles finished second at their own invitational with 48 points. San Elizario, which is ranked No. 3 in the state in Class 4A, had three runners in the top 10 – senior Julian Guerra (fifth, 17:00.96), senior Angel Maese (sixth, 17:03.84) and senior Gustavo Salazar (tenth, 17:17.69). They will race at the Loretto/Cathedral Open at Veterans Park on Saturday.

5. Coronado: The T-Birds finished second at the Bel Air Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park with 86 points. 7. Burges: The Mustangs finished third at the Bel Air Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park with 133 points. Its top runner was junior Jesus Gastelum-Bustamante who finished sixth in 16:32.34. Burges will not race this weekend.

8. Chapin: The Huskies did not race last weekend. They will race at the Loretto/Cathedral Open at Veterans Park on Saturday

9. Eastlake: The Falcons finished third at the San Elizario/Tornillo Invitational. Its top runner was sophomore Daniel Flores who finished 16th in 18:18.76. They are schedule to race the Loretto/Cathedral Open at Veterans Park on Saturday.

10. Del Valle: Del Valle did not run its full varsity team at the Bel Air Invitational. Its top runner was junior Damian Espinosa who was ninth in 17:04.84. They will race at the El Paso High Invitational on Saturday.

High School Boy’s Cross Country Poll: Week 4

Every Thursday, El Paso Running will utilize a point system to highlight El Paso’s top boy’s cross country runners.

The system is as follows: In a race of less than 150 runners, first place gets 10 points, second gets 9 points all the way down to 10th place which gets 1 point. For meets with between 150 to 300 runners, double points will be rewarded meaning 20 points for first, 19 for second all the way down to 1 point for 20th. For every additional 150 runners, another 10 runners will be included in the points.

1. Franklin: Franklin placed three runners in the top five and five in the top 10 to win the Clint/Riverside Invitational at Clint High School. Senior Matthew Engle won his second race of the season in 15:43.62. Senior Sebastian Gonzalez was third (15:54.87), senior Adan Castillo was fifth (15:58.99), senior Juan Leal was sixth (16:01.24), senior Carlos Mendez was seventh (16:05.08) and senior Gabriel Uranga was tenth (16:35.37). The team will not race this weekend.

2. Eastwood: The Troopers did not race last week. They are schedule to race at the San Elizario/Tornillo Invitational on Saturday.

3. El Paso High: The Tigers won the Americas Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park with 35 points. Junior Miles Westbrook won his second individual title, finishing in 16:32.15. Other top 10 runners were senior Leo Valenzuela (third, 16:52.60), junior Ulysses O’Rourke (seventh, 17:37.79) and senior Aydan Lugo (ninth, 17:45.03). The Tigers are scheduled to race at the Bel Air Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park.

4. San Elizario: The Eagles finished second at the Clint/Riverside Invitational with 73 points. San Elizario had two runners in the top 10 – senior Julian Guerra (fourth, 15:58.34) and senior Angel Maese (eighth, 16:12.46). The team is schedule to race at the San Elizario/Tornillo Invitational at Tornillo on Saturday.

5. Coronado: The T-Birds finished third at the Clint/Riverside Invitational. Senior Edgar Valles was second in 15:54.34 and junior Max Sandhu was ninth in 16:23.52. The team will race at the Bel Air Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park on Friday morning.

6. Pebble Hills: The Spartans finished second at the Americas Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park with 73 points. Senior Mark Barajas was second in 16:41.361.The team will race at the Bel Air Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park on Friday.

7. Burges: The Mustangs finished third at the Americas Invitational with 93 points and move up two spots. Junior Jesus Gastelum-Bustamante was fourth in 17:19.07 and junior Malin Arnoldussen was sixth in 17:24.52. Burges will race the Bel Air Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park on Friday.

8. Chapin: The Huskies drop a spot after finishing fifth at the Americas Invitational. Chapin, who is still without senior Seth Truax, had two runners in the top 10 – junior Braulio Torres (eighth, 17:38.755) and Sean Sanchez (tenth, 17:45.41). Only three runners are scheduled to race at the Bel Air Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park on Friday morning.

9. Eastlake: The Falcons finished fourth at the Americas Invitational. Its top runner was Sebastian Garces who was 13th in 18:03.83. They are schedule to race at the San Elizario/Tornillo Invitational on Saturday.

10. Del Valle: It appears no one wants the 10th spot. In consecutive weeks there is a new No. 10 team. The Conquistadores take the spot after finishing sixth at the Clint/Riverside Invitational. Its top runner was junior Damian Espinosa who was 14th in 16:59.87. They will race at the Bel Air Invitational Friday morning.

Dropped out: Bel Air.

Franklin: The Eastwood Twilight Invitational came down to Franklin’s sixth runner Gabriel Uranga who finished ahead of Eastwood’s sixth runner, giving the Cougars the win at Eastside Sports Complex on Friday. The teams tied at 36 after Franklin placed four runners – senior Matthew Engle (third, 15:36.19), senior Juan Leal (fourth, 15:38.50), senior Adan Castillo (seventh, 15:52.10) and senior Carlos Mendez (tenth, 16:00.64) – in the top 10. The team will race at the Clint/Riverside Invitational at Clint High School on Saturday.

2. Eastwood: The Troopers had four runners in the top 10 at their Twilight Invitational, including junior Aidan Torres who set a city-best 15:28.90 to win the event. Senior Sulliman Rodriguez was fifth in 15:39.73, senior Leo Espino was sixth in 15:44.38 and junior Luke Cruz (eighth,      15:55.39). Next up is the Clint/Riverside Invitational at Clint High School on Saturday.

3. El Paso High: The Tigers finished third at the Eastwood Twilight Invitational with 104 points. For the second week in a row, junior Miles Westbrook was second in 15:34.11. Senior Leo Valenzuela was 13th in 16:15.98. El Paso will race the Americas Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park on Friday morning.       

4. San Elizario: The Eagles jump two spots after placing fourth at the Eastwood Twilight with 133 points. Its top two runners were senior Julian Guerra (11th, 16:03.12) and senior Angel Maese (15th, 16:23.61). The team will race at the Clint/Riverside Invitational at Clint High School on Saturday.

5. Coronado: The T-Birds drop one after finishing fifth at the Eastwood Twilight with 150 points. Senior Edgar Valles had another top 10 finish, placing ninth in 15:59.00. Sophomore Humberto Serna was 14th in 16:16.93. The team will travel to Clint High School for Clint/Riverside Invitational on Saturday.

6. Pebble Hills: The Spartans finished eighth at the Cleveland Invitational in Albuquerque and dropped one spot. Senior Mark Barajas had a top 10 finish, placing seventh in 16:09.0.The team will race the Americas Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park on Friday morning.

10. Bel Air: The Highlanders crack the top 10 with its eighth-place finish at the Eastwood Twilight. Its top two runners were senior Hernnan Duarte (32nd, 17:03.29) and senior Leonardo Resendez (33rd, 17:03.68). Bel Air will race at the Clint/Riverside Invitational at Clint High School on Saturday.

High School Boy’s Cross Country Poll: Week 2

Every Thursday, El Paso Running will utilize a point system to highlight El Paso’s top boy’s cross country runners.

The system is as follows: In a race of less than 150 runners, first place gets 10 points, second gets 9 points all the way down to 10th place which gets 1 point. For meets with between 150 to 300 runners, double points will be rewarded meaning 20 points for first, 19 for second all the way down to 1 point for 20th. For every additional 150 runners, another 10 runners will be included in the points.

For those who like raw times, we also list the Top 25 boys race times and the meets and dates that they occurred.

Top 10

1. Franklin: The Cougars, who ranked No. 7 in the state by the Cross Country Coaches Association of Texas, placed eight runners in the top 10 to win their invitational at Mary Frances Keisling Park with 16 points. Four seniors led the way with Matthew Engle taking top honors in 15:31.34 followed by Juan Leal (second, 15:58.83), Adan Castillo (third, 15:59.09) and Sebastian Gonzalez (fourth, 16:10.26). Other top 10 runners were senior Carlos Mendez (sixth, 16:24.61), senior Gabriel Uranga (eighth, 16:43.43), sophomore Sebastian Mendez (ninth, 16:44.84) and sophomore Jacob Martinez (tenth, 16:49.94). The team will race at the Eastwood Twilight Invitational at Eastside Sports Complex on Friday.

2. Eastwood: The Troopers won the 3.4-mile Canutillo Invitational at Canutillo Middle School scoring 37 points. Eastwood had four runners in the top 10 including junior Aidan Torres who won his first varsity race in 17:30.01. Senior 4, Sulliman Rodriguez, was fourth in 17:48.46, junior Luke Cruz was sixth in 17:52.08 and senior Leo Espino was tenth in 18:13.69. Eastwood will race at its own invitational at Eastside Sports Complex on Friday.

3. El Paso High: The Tigers move up one after its second place showing at the Canutillo Invitational with 71 points. Junior Miles Westbrook was second in 17:42.51 and senior Leo Valenzuela was seventh in 17:53.53. The team will race at the Eastwood Twilight Invitational at Eastside Sports Complex on Friday.

4. Coronado: The T-Birds move up two spots, finishing third at the Canutillo Invitational with 96 points. Senior Edgar Valles was fifth in 17:48.76, sophomore Humberto Serna was eighth in 17:56.77 and junior Max Sandhu was 11th in 18:15.97. They will compete at the Eastwood Twilight Invitational at Eastside Sports Complex on Friday night.

5. Pebble Hills: The Spartans were fourth at the Canutillo Invitational with 110 points. Senior Mark Barajas was ninth in 17:59.19. The team will travel to Albuquerque on Saturday.

6. San Elizario: The Eagles drop three spots after its fifth-place finish at Canutillo. It’s top runners were senior Angel Maese (13th, 18:34.21) and senior Julian Guerra (15th, 18:55.38). The team will regroup for the Eastwood Twilight Invitational at Eastside Sports Complex on Friday.

7. Chapin: The Huskies move up one after its second-place finish at the Franklin Invitational at Mary Frances Keisling Park with 54 points. SeniorSeth Truax was seventh in 16:27.53 and senior Sean Sanchez was 12th in 17:01.20. Chapin will have another challenge at the Eastwood Twilight Invitational at Eastside Sports Complex Friday night.

8. Eastlake: The Falcons move up two spots. In its season debut, Eastlake finished third at the Franklin Invitational with 89 points. Its top runner was junior Sebastian Garces was 16th in 17:27.52. The team will travel to Albuquerque on Saturday.

9. Burges: The Mustangs crack the top 10 with a sixth-place finish at the Canutillo Invitational. Burges had two top 10 runners – juniors Malin Arnoldussen (18th, 19:05.91) and Jesus Gastelum-Bustamante (20th, 19:14.53). Burges will race at the Gadsden Invitational at Chaparral High School on Saturday.

10. Socorro: The Bulldogs crack the top 10 after scoring 115 points to finish fourth at the Franklin Invitational. Socorro’s top runner was freshman Jorge Mendez who finished 22nd in 18:33.55. The team will race Eastwood Twilight Invitational at Eastside Sports Complex on Friday

The season got off to a great start last week at the Pebble Hills Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park.

Top 10

1. Franklin: The Cougars placed six runners in the top 10 to win the Pebble Hills Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park. Seniors Matthew Engle was second in 16:42.84 and Sebastian Gonzalez was third in 17:01.420. Seniors Adan Castillo was sixth (17:23.63) and Juan Leal was seventh (17:23.72). Senior Carlos Mendez was ninth (17:32.52) and sophomore Sebastian was 10th in 17:39.53.  Franklin will race in its own invitational Saturday at Mary Frances Keisling Park.

2. Eastwood: The Troopers did not race last week. Eastwood is scheduled to compete at the Canutillo Invitational at Canutillo Middle School on Saturday.

3. San Elizario: The Eagles did not race last week. San Elizario is scheduled to compete at the Canutillo Invitational at Canutillo Middle School.

4. El Paso High: The Tigers won the 2.7-mile Mt. View Invitational, placing five runners in the top seven, claiming the top four spots. Junior Miles Westbrook won in 15:42.46 followed by senior Leo Valenzuela (15:54.53), junior Ulysses O’Rourke (16:28.36) and junior Lorenzo Shields (17:00.21). Freshman Justin Ontiveros was seventh in 17:35.16. El Paso will be challenged at the Canutillo Invitational at Canutillo Middle School on Saturday.

5. Pebble Hills: The Spartans were second at its own invitational at Blackie Chesher Park with 82 points. Junior Jorge Soto was the lone top 10 runner, finishing eighth in 17:28.95. The team placed four runners in the top 20 – sophomore Zyler Garnica (17th, 18:22.61), junior Pablo Corral (18th, 18:33.065), freshman Adrian Cisneros Rodriguez (19th, 18:42.71) and senior Daniel Luna (20th, 18:52.07). Two of their top runners, senior Mark Barajas and junior Ameen Ibrahim, did not run. The team will race at the Canutillo Invitational on Saturday.

6. Coronado: The T-Birds took the top three spots to win the Irvin Invitational. Sophomore Humberto Serna was first in 14:21.91 followed by junior Max Sandhu (14:33.91) and sophomore Rodrigo Pinales (15:08.05). The course was 2.7 miles. Coronado’s top two runners, seniors Edgar Valles and Carlos Mendez, did not race. The team is scheduled to race at the Canutillo Invitational on Saturday.

7. Americas: The Trailblazers finished fourth at the Pebble Hills Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park with 178 points. Its lone bright spot was junior Diego Romero who won the individual title in 16:42.66. It’s other two top runners, seniors Christian Hurtado and Jacob Corral, did not race. The team will compete at the Canutillo Invitational on Saturday.

8. Chapin: The Huskies finished third at the Pebble Hills Invitational at Blackie Chesher Park with 109 points. Senior Seth Truax was fourth in 17:03.42. Chapin had three others in the top 20, senior Sean Sanchez (13th, 17:48.85) and junior Braulio Torres (14th, 17:49.00). The team will race the Franklin Invitational at Mary Frances Keisling Park on Saturday.

9. Hanks: The Knights did not run its top two runners at the Mt. View Invitational. Sophomore Zerach Hernandez, was the top finisher, completing the 2.7-mile course in 17:55.35, good for 11th place. The team will race at the Franklin Invitational at Mary Frances Keisling Park on Saturday.

10. Eastlake: The Falcons did not run its varsity at the Pebble Hills Invitational. They are scheduled to race the Franklin Invitational at Mary Frances Keisling Park on Saturday.

Top 10

1. Franklin: The Cougars had a breakout season last year, advancing to the Class 6A State Championship for the first time and placed seventh. Franklin also won its first district crown and finished fourth at the Region 1-6A championship. Senior Matthew Engle will be the top runner. Seniors Adan Castillo, Sebastián Gonzalez and Juan Leal could propel Franklin back to state.

2. Eastwood: The Troopers look to improve after placing second in district and eighth at regionals last year. Eastwood has a solid pack of four lead by senior Sulliman Rodriguez and juniors Danny Torres, Leo Espino and Luke Cruz.

3. San Elizario: New season, new coach, new runners, same goal. The Eagles picked up another Class 4A state medal last year, finishing third. Long-time assistant Jorge Maese is now the head coach as Cesar Morales has moved on to be athletic director at San Elizario. Seniors Julian Guerra, Angel Maese and Gustavo Salazar are the top three runners and will be heavily depended on to return to state.

4. El Paso High: The Tigers won the District 1-5A Championship and placed eighth at regionals last year.  Junior Miles Westbrook and senior Leo Valenzuela, who advanced to the Class 5A State Championship, will lead this talented team. Senior Aydan Lugo and juniors Ulysses O’Rourke and Lorenzo Shields could challenge for a top four regional finish and a trip to state.

5. Pebble Hills: The Spartans will be led by senior Mark Barajas and juniors Jorge Soto, Ameen Ibrahim and Pablo Corral. Look for sophomore Zyler Garnica and senior Daniel Luna to gobble up points.

6. Coronado: The T-Birds return four runners from its regional team. Seniors Edgar Valles and Carlos Mendez will do the heavy lifting for Coronado with junior Max Sandhu trying to improve on last year.

7. Americas: Look for the Trailblazers to contend for a spot to regionals with the return of junior Diego Romero and seniors Christian Hurtado and Jacob Corral. Americas will need to find some depth in order for that to happen.

8. Chapin: The Huskies have three returning runners from the regional qualifying team of last year – seniors Seth Truax and Dauntae Herrera and junior Braulio Torres. Depth could be an issue for Chapin.

9. Hanks: The Knights lost its top two runners but have some talent returning. The top runners will be senior Abel Nevajas, junior Saul Mares, sophomore Darian Hernandez, senior Diego Rodriguez and Zerach Hernandez, a sophomore.

10. Eastlake: The Falcons have four runners returning — seniors Jarrell Kearney, Julian Quinonez and Diego Mota and junior Sebastian Garces. Watch for newcomer sophomore Diego Romero to also contribute.

Dropped out: None.

Boy’s Track and Field Top 10 Times and Distances: Final

The final week of the track and field season resulted in three city best times and marks set at the UIL Track and Field Championship.

City best performers were:

Coronado senior Luis Pastor who ran a season city best 4:09.04 and finished with a silver medal in the 1,600 meters at the Class 6A State Championship.

Pastor returned to the track and Coronado senior and ran a season city best 8:57.35 and finished with a bronze medal in the 3,200 meters.

Riverside senior Angel Munoz earned a bronze medal in the Class 4A 300 hurdles, racing to a 37.83, a season city best.

Other state medalist were:

Horizon senior Ricardo Leyva earned a silver medal at the Class 5A high jump championship, clearing 6-feet, 10-inches.

San Elizario senior Chris Moreno ran a season and personal best 1:53.80 to earn a silver medal in the 800.

Riverside senior Angel Munoz earned a bronze medal in the long jump, leaping 22-feet, 8.75 inches.

Other state performances include:

Class 6A

The Franklin boys 400-meter relay team of Beau Sparks, Julian Mars, Gerald Williams and Jordan Morales finished fifth in 41.42.

Class 5A

Chapin junior Seth Truax was ninth in the 800-run finishing in 1:59.01.

Parkland’s 800-meter relay team of Kaleb Martinez, DJ Crest, Joseph Gomez and Lincoln Juardo finished eighth in 1:39.50 after a mishandled baton pass.

Class 4A

San Elizario’s Chris Moreno ran a 4:28.28 in the 1,600 and finished sixth.

Riverside senior Jose Guardado was fifth in the long jump, with a mark of 22-feet, 3.5 inches.

Class 3A

Tornillo junior Daniel Romero finished sixth in the 3,200-meter run in 9:42.52. He finished ninth in the 1,600 in a time of 4:32.17.

Boy’s Track and Field Top 10 Distances and Times: Week 12

The 12th week of the track and field season resulted in 8 city best times and marks set at regionals.

Top performances include:

Franklin senior Beau Sparks ran a personal best 10.49 in the 100 and finished fourth at the Region 1-6A Championship.

Coronado senior Luis Pastor ran a city and season best 4:13.65 in the 1,600 meters and a city and season best 9:05.01 in the 3,200 meters to win the Region 1-6A Championship.

Parkland’s 800-meter relay team of Kaleb Martinez, DJ Crest, Joseph Gomez and Lincoln Juardo ran a city best  1:27.06 and finished third at the Region 1-5A Championship.

Horizon senior Ricardo Leyva set a personal best mark of 6-feet, 11 inches to win the Region 1-5A high jump championship.

Parkland senior DJ Crest had a triple jump of 47-feet, 0 inches, a personal best, and finished fourth at the Region 1-5A Championship.

San Elizario senior Chris Moreno set a personal best 1:54.37 in the 800 meters to win the Region 1-4A Championship.
